Station wagon trailer hitch?

Hello, all,

We've been searching high and low for the appropriate trailer hitch for our '58 Provincial wagon. Does anyone out there have one or know someone who does? We would like to find one of the dealer-installed Draw-tite hitches, but if someone else made one that works, that would be fine, also. '57 and '58 four-door wagons would have used the same hitch.

I think the old 59 station wagon I have has a hitch. I don't know what brand it is because I've never really payed much attention to it. It is/was chromed although I'm not sure of its condition at present. Don't know if there's any similarities betweew those years.

John; if it's chromed chances are it is an original Draw-Tite made for a Stude. wagon. I doubt that it would fit the '57-'58 Wagons without a extention welded on, but that is possible.
I did that to my '57 Parkview 2dr. Wagon when it was mine, it's now StudeDave57's. All the 2 & 4 door wagons are the same, but because of the large "shelf" in front of the bumper behind the tailgate the '59-'62 Wagon hitch would be way short. These hitches are bolt on to the frame crossmember and bumper. They are getting quite hard to find anymore. That said, watch Mr Biggs come up with a DOZEN of em!!

About 10 years ago I bought a nice, low mileage 1963 Mercury Monterey 4 dr. that I towed my 20' trailer with. ( A nice, comfy ride for the family, but lousy gas mileage, and had to use premium also.) Anyway, after I got the car I took it to a local outfit that specialized in trailer hitches, I believe they also did custom welding. They acted like it was no big deal to build and install a reciever hitch. They did a beautiful job, and it had a capacity of way more than I would ever need.
So ask around, poss. at RV dealers for someone to make a custom hitch for the Stude.

I have a dealer installed one on my 58 Packard Sedan. It is all chrome and is hooked to the frame. Try Reese Products in Elkhart, Indiana. Longtime specialists in towing accesssories, located just aways away from South Bend, they may be able to get you fixed up. Give a 'em a call & see what they say. Truth be known though, hitches were pretty generic, until FWD unitbody cars became the norm. S'why pickups are so popular these days. But, anyway..

As Dad (aka StudeRich) mentioned, my Parkview has a hitch that he had modified to fit his (at that time) car. It does indeed hit the plate slightly when the gate is dropped, so I'm thinking that one day I'll just add a well-placed washer or two and that'll fix her right up. Once she's back on the road I plan to use her for what I know she does well- tow stuff!!! Can't you just picture her with one of my other '57s in tow???
