View Full Version : Red Wheels?

OK, when I first got my Stude it was Rat-Rod'ed and had red wheels, which I personally thought was odd... but seemed to match the red interior the PO had put in her... as I look around at pics of other members rides, and more online, it seems quite a few rides have red wheels... this may sound stupid, but is there something about red wheels that I am missing? Or is it just an odd co-ink-y-dink?

Well maybe you have not been around long enough to remember that in the 1950's you were "out of it" if you did not have RED Wheels! It used to be a big deal to have '55 Olds spinner Wheelcovers and RED rims. Also a big street rod and now "RAT Rod" retro thing on all makes to have Red Rims, Wide Whites, and bottle Cap, Hub Caps! [:0]

They did look very sharp with the Wide White Walls of the day, and they got your attention, which is what it was all about! In those days new wheel Covers even were something not everyone could afford, you remember hearing about them getting stolen, right? This was also before most "Mags" were available or affordable for the average High School Student Grocery Store "bagger" type kid!

No, they do not belong on Studebakers, unless your car happens to be a '47-'60 RED car or a '47-'55 Black Car!

I told N8 if he did not paint his wheels red, I'd do it for him.:)
He gave in, and loves the look. It's a total 50's thing.

Early R series trucks all came with red wheels no matter what the color was.

My dad came of car-age in the late 30s...and he added red wheels to most of his cars until his death.

A notable exception were his ice-blue 59, then 60, Cadillac four door hardtops...

I painted my wheels red for that hot rod look, but will likely be transitioning to a different look.

I just love red rims, especially on a green car! [}:)]

I even painted the rims on my mother's brand new Buick Special red.

If it wasn't for red rims, we would just have a rusty truck :)

Maybe it's just us old fools, but flat black primer and red wheels just looks natural.

I think Comanche Red wheels were almost standard on early 50's Studebakers.

I considered a number of colors for the Daytona and almost painted the wheels black, but settled on red. If I change my mind I'll paint them some other color.

My 1953 Commander was coral red when it left the factory... and the wheels were the same color when I got the car in 1963.... I am assuming that they were that way from the factory.
I would like to know because the car is just about ready for paint & I was planning on painting the wheels at the same time.

According to the factory color book, if your Coral Red Commander was built in South Bend it would have left the factory with Coral Red wheels. A Los Angeles car in that color would have Comanche Red wheels, and a Canadian built car would have Ivory Mist wheels.

Here's my little piglet in all its red-wheeled, wide white walled glory.

And here below is how it looked before I put the whites on it. And just to answer your question. I did put the wide whites on it for the sole purpose of attending the Billetproof Traditional Hot Rod Show in the SanFrancisco area last month.
