View Full Version : Getting ready for Hershey

Grace is almost ready for Hershey. I took the steering wheel cover off and put on the front inner fender rubber splash shields that I lost 4 points for at Lancaster. Still no trunk mat (or Grace would have been a 400 point car). Yesterday I trekked out to New Jersey to buy a full set of 5 used 7.10-15 bias ply tires from friend (and SDC member) Jack Widmann to put on our old, original wheels. I'll have to do some clean up and paint touch up on them, but then I'll have the old wide whites mounted on them. I won't even bother to have them balanced since for us it's only a 4-mile back roads drive to Hershey.

And speaking of trunk mats, I had done some Internet searching for raffia material -- the stuff that the original mats were made from. I located a company that sells it as a wall covering. So I got a sample and passed information on to Nick at Phantom. He liked the stuff even though the coloring wasn't right. He told me he would try to contact the wall covering company's supplier to see if they would be able to make it in the correct color for Studebaker mats. Keep your fingers crossed.

Grace is on the right; Jack's car is the other one.

Beautiful cars! But I was also impressed with your only being 4 miles from Hershey!! How cool that must be[:p]

I plan on heading out to Hershey myself this week...first time in probably four or five years. I'll be working in Harrisburg M-Th anyway so figured I might as well!

Stude buddy Joe Kastellic, and Ted Filer, son and grandson of the owners of my hometown's Studebaker dealer, will be there with me. It'll be Ted's first visit to Hershey. He's actually more into Pontiacs and has a sharp light yellow '68 LeMans convertible with Cragars. He has said that the only thing he remembers about his family's Stude dealership (being born in '62) is being told 'not to beep the horns on the cars in the showroom'!

I understand it's all on pavement this year...YEA!!!

I can't wait to see your car Alan.

I have been to Hershey almost every year since 1982. This is my son at Hershey in 82. He is now 30 years old. Does anyone recognize this 51 Studebaker?

I expect to be there wandering aimlessly Friday and on Saturday with my pink and purple Speedster peeking at a pile of pretty cars.

To Bill Clark,

If that's your Speedster in the photo above, Grace is the 3rd car in that row.

To everyone else: my brother, Bob, and I will be sitting by Grace at least until she is judged. Be sure to stop by and introduce yourselves.

To Bill Pressler,

Since you're going to be in the Harrisburg area anyway, be sure to go to the race car conditioning runs Friday morning (11 AM I think) in the Hershey stadium. Hopefully, there will be some fellows with Offy-powered cars there. There's nothing like the sound of an Offenhauser!

There will be Offy powered cars there including one or two owned by Bruce Slifer from Allentown. His cars are immaculate just as are tje others in his collection.

For Those who are going to Hershey, here's the place for the weather:

Alan,
You have a great looking car. Thank you for the information on the trunk mat material. Please keep us posted on the progress on this subject. I would like to buy one if they are made again.
Good luck at Hershey.
