  • Sw Tachs & VDO guts?

I have explored several options for my '64 SW tach. I can have it serviced, I understand the senders can be upgraded with electronics (does not sound like a great solution) or the guts can replaced with modern VDO brand Tach innerds.
Modern guts will eliminate the sender & give great accuracy but the people who provide this service get about $250. Has anyone tried this?
What model tach would you use & can the" better than average" wrench swinger do this himself?
I am looking to get on this asap!
    Thanks

I didn't reply because if I decided to convert to modern guts, the $250 seems cheap enough that I would not try it myself.

I had mine done earlier this summer.I think it was a tad more
        than $250.The doer,was a shop in Arkansas.Williamson instruments
        I think,got his name from Jon Myer.Anyway,it works fine.However,
you may have to wait awhile,as it took 2 phone calls to remind
        him he had it.

Hi Bill, you didn't mention type of distributor, but I wouldn't rule out a mechanical tach, especially if accuracy is a priority.

I installed a Sunpro #CP7909 in my 63 Lark and a 63 Hawk. No sender required and only minor triming of the original bezels and the Sunpro tach, total cost less than $40. I am not after authenticity.

Here is a direct fit into your bezels using a refaced Autometer tach and Stewart Warner speedo. Materials easily avaiable and simple to DIY.

On that Autometer tach,is that a standard Avanti face? I have an NOS 1964 face from Meyers. Can I simply use my face & bezel??
What Model number tach did you use, if you recall?

That's a beautiful setup Jim, can you really go 140 MPH IN REVERSE, to get that backwards needle to go there!

Jackson; how did you do that trick? Smoke and mirrors? Pic #1 has the Speedo on the RIGHT, Pic #2 has the Speedo on the LEFT, from the front! Backwards photo? Or you changed your mind and moved it?

That looks like the same tach's GM used in the early olds cars.
Someone still sells the stewart warner old gagues at the swap meets. I picked up a new set-for a 63 Avanti.

It would help if I knew which car.
I have good used Hawk tachometers.

                        Good catch StudeRich!
I must have inadvertently reversed the negative when I edited the photo. Note the location of the ignition switch cutout in the two photos.
