  • coil question

    On a 6 volt pos. system, using a modern area coil( that is the two terminals are on top)What wire goes to the distributor the pos. or the neg. What would happen if the wrong wire was attached?

    Pos. to distributor. If hooked up wrong it might not run as well but it will run and not ruin anything.

      spark output is reduced a bit with coil polarity reversed. Sparks have a harder time leaping from the hot ground electrode, or maybe it's the other way around.

      The old Briggs and Stratton manuals used to have a picture of a test for correct polarity by positioning a lead pencil in the spark gap to cause a shower of sparkles to chase after the leaping electrons.
