on 53 and 54 v-8 232's i see in spec charts a dffferent compression ratio and hp output and i'm curious as to what studebaker did to engine to gain the extra hp ? thanks -- alf

They raised the C/R from 7:0 to 7:5 to take it from 120HP up to 127HP.

      Seven...?
That's just noise in the dyno!

Now, Mike, agree today's drag engines don't spend enough hours on the dyno to repeat reliably within seven horsepower. However, OEM engines spend hours at full throttle and seven horsepower equates to a 6% increase for the old 232" iron. Even on an eight-hundred-horsepower Cup engine, you know well the engine builders would spend however many hundred thousand dollars you asked if you could guarantee them seven more reliable horsepower than the best they are doing for next week's three-hour race.

          Jack -

          Agreed...you are absolutly right....just couldn't resist..!

Most anyone would be happy with a reliable gain of 7hp...depending on cost and current state of tune!

              A.F. -

Chambers were slightly different in some heads, there was/is two gasket thicknesses.

              Piston compression distance...no change.
              Rod length...no change.
              Head thickness...no change.

They would have really been crazy to make changes that way. WAY...too much money involved.
