  • Studebaker vs. Fabulous Hudson Hornet

    Hello everyone,

I just bought this little photo on eBay. My guess is that it dates from 1951 and that it was taken during the pace lap before the green flag dropped. Can anyone supply details?

Look closely in the upper left corner; that's a Henry J. With GM having pulled the plug on Oldsmobile, it looks like all of the race cars are orphans.

    Kindest regards,

My guess is that it is in the deep south given the color composition of the audience.

Alan: Someone will be able to identify that #23 Commander Starlight; it's been seen here before. Hang tight and wait until Richard Quinn or Bob Coolidge wake up this morning.

It's easy to tell why the Commander and #6 Hudson are out front; they have been better prepared for racing by having only one windshield wiper, as opposed to the cars visible behind them that are still encumbered with two wipers! [:0] BP

But Bob, the Hudson Hornet is still "encumbered" by its factory radio antenna! Mabe he listens to some "tunes" on the pace laps.[8D][8D]

That antenna won't matter, cuz it's angled back and streamlined. I like that the Stude has professionally blanked out headlights.

There was a thread on this car, but not on this particular race.

Isn't that "REBEL" Frank Mundy's 51 Commander in the photo?
After reading the thread put here by lstude obviously that is Frank Mundy.

What wheels/offset are you running on your car? Factory wheel, or something custom made(expensive?)

                          Thanks,

That's Richard Poe's 1963 R1/4-speed Lark Custom 2-door, Tom. You've seen it many times at The Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags.

He actually beat Ted in the eighth-mile; the R2 doesn't have time to realize the full potential of supercharging, whereas Richard's unsupercharged R1 has a higher compression ratio and can stay with Ted -and often slightly better him- in the eighth![:0] BP
