  • coolant hole in one end of head

I've been 'search'ing for this for half an hour. there was a discussion that mentioned a 'missing' coolant hole in one end of the V8 heads (the hole is in the gasket.) I found that at least one of my heads has this non-hole and wish to know if it is supposed to be not there, or what. I didn't read thoroughly when I saw it.

Maybe the undrilled hole was in the block, at the front end, just below the dowel.

Tom: the V8 heads are reversible. Each end has the opening for the heater sending unit. 3 of the ends have flat end plates and one should have the threaded opeing for said block unit. All use the same gasket that has the opening.....

Tom, are you talking about a hole on the end of the head or on the face that mates to the block?

Warren, yes, a coolant passage between the head and the block. just below the dowel pin/head drain.

I just looked at two 259 blocks and 4 heads. All 4 heads have the coolant holes you are talking about so they can be used on either side.

The blocks have the holes at the rear but not at the front.

Of course the head gaskets will have the holes on both ends so they can be used on either side.

I assume from the above that the block is supposed to not have a hole in the forward end to match the hole in the back end. I will not spend the time and effort to put extra holes in my block.

                That's a good idea Tom.
