View Full Version : Vin Plate Legit ???

Hi,Started the process of getting the title for the 63 lark today.The VIN plate on the door pillar looks strange to me as it is not straight on the pillar and the paint lines around it seem to have been.The font on the numbers is also different between the first 6 in the 63V part and the other four 6's in the serial number.Also serial number 63V-6666 seemed a bit strange(though I guess possible).No sign left of the numbers on the crossmember.Can some of you more knowledgable stude folks tell me if the numbers look correct on this VIN plate?The fine folks at the SCDMV [u]WILL </u> check them at the point we title it here.Thanks,Steve

It is fairly common to have the plate crooked and also slightly missing the bare spot it was supposed to be in. If they had used the notches in the plate and holes in the pillar for screws before welding it would not have happened. The old story: "the best laid plans"...

The 37th V-8 '64 Stude. built, my Daytona Sedan is worse than this one, and the Calif. CHP had the secret serial number checked on the frame to verify that it was correct, after they impounded the car and removed the trailer hitch! :(

Added 5/14/08 3:49 PM PDT; Looking at the enlarged view Wolfie, that looks fine, if you ever encountered my problem you could point out how those welds are continuous from the plate to the pillar, absolutely no possibility that they were messed with! [^]

My vin tag was painted over then clean off using 60 grit wet dry sand paper, you know the result. It had been removed at some point then re-attached using screws and adhesive, but passed inspection at our Ministry of Transport. I have yet to look for the secret vin, too many other things to do under the car, but I did order a built sheet and compare the line up....seems about right.
The font on my vin seems to be the same as that on Steve's pic but I am replacing it with a new replacement vin tag.

If John and Rich hadn't verified this I would have said it looked replaced or swapped for sure. They should know. The paint lines are what got me thinking that. Did the factory NOT paint the square area for the plate, mask it and then spot weld the serial number plate on after that? Why would the spot welds look different, too? I've seen them applied crooked too, but the original paint was under it all. Hard to tell without a better close up, Wolfie. No chance for a wire brush search on the cross member number at all to verify the VIN? I can see why the CHP would impound a car with a plate like that, Rich. Looks suspicious with the paint/rust area different and it crooked.
Of course, the way my stainless side trim holes were originally drilled on my Lark, it doesn't surprise me. Some days things didn't get lined up very well in South Bend. On the days I lose my readers, the same thing happens!

I think the area behind the plate may have been masked, because all the crooked plates I've seen show the bare metal.

It looks right to me. The bare metal square is there as it was the intentional area the plate was to be welded. It is difficult to weld though paint. I think it is a, not so unusual, sloppy attachment job from the factory.

For what it's worth...
Just looking at it you can see the differences in the 6 in the 63 and the other 6s.
I have no idea if it is relevant... the final 4 numbers could have always been etched by a different machine which could explain the difference.

Here's the plate on my R2 GT, notice the font is different on the 6 in 64, just like the vin in question. It also appears to have bare metal behind it. (note surface rust)

Makes you think that the "64V" part (or the 63V) was done in advance and then the actual sequential number was added as production was called for.
I've never heard of any serial# plates that were slated/stamped but never used, but I DO have an Avanti body tag for a '64 that was never built! It came from a handful I've laid eyes on that somehow got away from the factory after South Bend shut down.[}:)]

Thanks to all of you for you input. The pic JDP posted made me feel a lot better about the whole thing. (Just one example of a picture being worth a thousand words, I guess)
I'm still not real sure about having a car with all those sixes together. My boss said sell it[:0]. I do not think that I will let my discomfort go that far. Four together doesn't hold the same meaning for me as three would have, though as he pointed out there are three at the end of it. I think he just wants my car;)

The first time I saw one that way (which was probably the first studebaker VIN I ever saw) made me think it had been changed too! But after seeing most if not all Stude VINs that way I realized that's just the way they did it. Remember, times were much different 40 or more years ago. Deals were still made on a hand shake, etc.
When you go to the DMV, it might be wise to take some of these pictures of other VINs to help you prove your case.

I got a historical tag for one of my Studes with a 666 and I gave it back to them. I had to buy another and claim the first was lost. I just didn't want that # on my tag for the rest of my life.

I'm with you on that account. Call me crazy, but I just would not want to have to explain the 666 every time it showed up. I know its irrational, but there it is.

Tracy, keep it, it's very cool for a vin. You two worked your butts off on it so far and I would just think of it as a GREAT poker hand; would you throw four of a kind away!!!? I don't think so..

Yes,we're keeping it (for a while anyway).Weather has kinda stalled our progress this week but we did score a better R/F door and have a line on a nicer set of seats.Bought a nice set of used door panels and picked a color range for it this week.Hopefully she will see brakes this weekend and paint the middle of next week.And I still have to get some wiring and the fuel system straight on it.We are looking at a maiden voyage the end of this month or first of next.Thanks,Steve
