  • Installing later brakes on 53K

Be careful there. There was a change in the spindles between the '53-'54. Later model shoes & drums may work on a '53 spindle (I don't know). But I do know Turner's Hawk brakes wont work on it. Don't ask me how I know that.

I have the brakes from a 61 Lark 8 I want to install on my 53 Commander hardtop. I think it should be a straight forward bolt on. My question comes about ordering parts. SI offers brake rebuid kits for "54-60 V-8 all and 61-64 Hawk". They also have "61-62 Lark 8 w/o power assist". Which should I order? What's the difference? Suspended pedals?

Good point. I think you will need to use the '53 wheel bearings.

Correction: I checked the parts book and the knuckle and wheel bearings were the same in 53 and 54.

Yes...the 61 and up Larks have a firewall mounted master cylinder. The other brake parts in the Larks are the same as 54-60 all and 61-64 Hawks.

Thanks for the input, I was unaware of the spindle change.

Several years ago I installed early Lark brake drums, backing plates and wheel cylinders on my sons '53 Champion. Fit was just fine without any change in spindles.

I thought all the 5 lug spindles were the same. Not the case?

I was actually talking about the king pins, not the spindles. Sorry.[V]

I installed brakes from a 60 Hawk to a 51 Commander and it bolted right on.

I had a '53 Champion Starliner and a '54 Commander 4-dr sedan. I took the front brakes off the '54 and everything bolted right on to the '53.
