On my 47 and 49 champions, the front of car sags especially the drivers side. When out of car, you can walk up to the front bumper, lift up and car comes right up and stays till getting back in car or pushing down on bumper. I suspect shock problems? If so what fluid do you now fill with and also if needed are rebuild parts available?[?]

Couple of items.
Shock absorbers (either kind....lever or tube) do NOT cause sag.
Shock absorbers prevent spring oscillation.
If your car sags, it has a spring problem.
If it stays up high (after lifting it manually), you might have a suspension bushing problem, or possibly a sticky shock valve problem)
A good cleaning and flushing with clean oil might help.
One other is the shock oil.
You can buy vintage shock oil for premium prices, or you can just drain the shock cavity and cycle it several times to pump the old oil out of it...
(DON'T look into the fill hole while cycling a lever action shock...ask me why I know)
Re-fill with straight 50w motor oil.
(A whole lot easier than trying to find shock oil...)
Hope the info helps.

I don't know about rebuild parts being available, but a rebuilding service is available. $175-225 each [:0][:0]

I've always wondered how much work it would be to fit tubular shocks to these cars. Any one done it[?] Four rebuilt lever-style could be $800-1000[:0][:0][:0]

I'm glad you've decided to take a break from that John Deere and hit the Studes for a while! I'll look for the '51 at the next club meeting.
Here's ma1951's John Deere crawler and my truck. He was gracious enough to let me drive the crawler, and now I gotta have one someday! Talk about FUN!!!
He was one of the first South GA Chapter members, and has been a close family friend for years and years.

Let me know when you want to move into a crawler. I will put you into an Oliver (which has a South Bend connection). I have owned better than 20 of them, from HG's up through the OC-96's.

Sounds great Guido! Not right now though, too many Stude things going on. But, one day, I'm gonna have to buy me one. I don't know what I'd do with it, but they're just so cool just to ride on! (And mess up the grass!)
My dad has a '56 John Deere 420 (not a crawler) that his grandad bought new. When he was about to sell it a few years back, Dad bought it, redone it, and gave it back to him. He's 93 years old now and still uses it during farming season.

Hey, there is not anything wrong with Oliver crawlers. Thats exactly what got me hooked on wanting a crawler years ago. My grandaddy had a Oc-4, a 1957 or 1958 model, that he rode me on when I was around 5 years old. Never forgot it. Always had to have a toy crawler ( Tonka )after that. This john deere became available and it also had been a family tractor. So I had to take time out of my Studebaker's fixing up to re-build this crawler. Still got some more work to do on crawler but I am ready to get back to my Studebakers.
P.S. Matthew I missed you at the Flordia State meet in Jacksonville.
