Just remember... if you can see some rust, then there's usually a lot more that you can't see...

Look at the floorboards and the rocker boxes (Between the rockers and the frame rails). Look at the trunk floors also.;)

Don't forget to look inside the bottom edge of that rare and valuable smooth decklid, (should NOT have the overlay panel as on '62-'63) for rust hiding inside the stiffener double edge.

With the GT Hawks in particular, it is much better to be conserned about the body and how much rust is present than the mechanical condition. Body parts for these cars are expensive and scarce, the mechanics are much more easily dealt with. If I was buying one, I wouldn't even be concerned if it ran. As for the ballpark price anywhere between $1000 and $15000 depending on condition.

It is possible that you will be looking at an Avanti powered Hawk. If so, it should have the "R" series emblems on it. If not, check the machined pad on the front of the engine and post the engine number and we will let you know. If the original invoice is available, that will list the options that it came with.

OCPG adds 10% for an R1 and 20% for an R2. IMHO, these numbers are fairly conservative for a seller...work well for a buyer ;).

looked at gt today. it is a R1, with automatic trans. owner says trans is good.last time driven was 1997. fan turned easy. some mice were living on the motor, interior perfect. body straight. really filthy. tires flat, no battery.stainless looks good, and the chrome. he is trying to get $10,000.00 as is. too much as far as i am concerned at this time. it also has the stainless panel on the trunk?? does these meen it was produced at the end run of the 63's?

If it has the rear overlay and it is original to the car, it isn't a '64. It might have been titled a '64, but...
I thought a viscous fan came with the R-1 or R-2. It should turn easily, but unless it is turning the engine too (which a viscous can't), that doesn't mean anything.
Even so, a solid R-1 '63 GT is still worth following up.

Walk away from that one, it's not worth that kind of money.Funny thing was I could not get anyone on here interested on this one for 10K, but had to end the auction early to keep it from going nuts on ebay.

A '63 Hawk shouldn't have a standing circle S hood ornament, only the '64 had that. '63 should have a engraved Hawk on the top of the grill shell. Get the serial number and the body tag number to try to verify the year of production. The trunk lid could have been replaced with one from the the wrong year. '64's are worth more than '63's so some have been changed to look like the other year. Dash panels on the '64's are all wood grain, black around the instruments. Pleats on the door panels run horizontal with a panel of the wood grain. Those are some of the most obvious differences. $10000 is way out of line for that car, I'd be worried to offer him $5000, but I'm pretty cheap.

I did sell it on ebay, the high bidder had a 13K plus proxy bid set and I agreed to sell it for 13 if he hit the Buy It now, which he did. My point was that I often offer cars to the Studebaker guys before ebay for less and get not a bit of interest.
The ebay car was worth 10K for sure, maybe the even 13K it sold for, the 64 being talked about was not. Lots of better cars out there for that kind of money.

The 63 Hawk GT had a stainless overlay on back of thr trunk lid. In 64 the trunk lid was smoothed and the overlay left off. Since you have an overlay, the GT is a 63---but--
only the 64 had an"S" standing hood ornament-so wht year is it? The 64 changed the
front parking light lens from amber plastic on the 63 to clear plastic, but used an amber bulb.
Also, the 64 had black accent stipes on the roof side moldings. The "Gran Turismo"
script, bird emblem. and chevron were chamged from gold on the 63 to chrome on the 64.

What doed the body plate say ??

Another, often missed, difference in the door chevrons is that they are red-white-blue left to right in 1963 and red-white-blue front to back in 1964.

Don't forget, 1963 is gold and 1964 is chrome. The finish on the script and the chevrons on the door will most likely have deteriorated worse on the '63's as that gold finish didn't stand up as well as chrome.

Meant to say, the hole spacing is also different between the '63 and '64 chevrons as well.
