  • gasket sealer... gas resistant

Are there any gas resistant sealers, Permatex, etc? I cut a gasket for the sending unit and wondered if a little sealer (gas resistant sealer) is indicated. If so , any suggestions are welcome.

I don't know if Studebaker used any sealant on that gasket originally, but you can safely use the old style "Number 2" Permatex if you want to. It isn't affected by gasoline. Just remember to NEVER use any SILICONE sealer if it'll come into contact with gasoline.

Why never use silicon sealer if it will com in contact with gasoline?

Simple, it is gasoline soluble! It does not seal gasoline, read the label.

I don't think the factory used any sealer on that gasket. It was a cork gasket, and the screws had small copper washers under the heads to seal. The "new" replacement gaskets are now neoprene (I think) just like the valve cover gaskets. Hope this helps.

I agree with Dave. Permatex Number 2 works well and is impervious to gasoline.
