  • Fuel System: r-1 fuel pump

Can anyone tell me if a 1964 r-1 gt hawk fuel pump is the same
as on a regular 289 engine.

No, it’s not the same. R1 pump is higher volume, part#1557213. Regular 289 pump is #1551168

The R1 and R2 Jet Thrust engined Hawks have a cool/excess fuel return line to the tank and use a 3/8" Fuel Line to the Tank, not 5/16" as a Standard engined Hawk, so inlet Fitting/Port is larger.

The Pump diaphragm portion is noticeably Larger. It is known as a Carter "Super" Pump.

I do not think the original Carter pumps are available any longer. Fairborn Studebaker in OH has modified Chrysler pumps that need to be clocked the right way to fit, but othewise provide the necessary fuel.
