  • Avanti II bodies

I assume when Studebaker shut the Avanti down, there were X amount of bodies left over and X amount in various stages of construction. Does anyone know when Avanti Motors ran out of bodies previously constructed & started to use newly built bodies?

Wrote a detailed story for Avanti Magazine a few years ago. There were I believe 82 bodies on hand at Ashtabula when Studebaker ceased building the Avanti. Avanti Motor Corporation purchased all the bodies and used them for its initial production.

If theres enough interest I will dig the story out and post possibly

Did Studebaker use up all the bodies on hand in South Bend before closing the line down?

This thread is great timing, my Avanti 63R1089 has body # 63RQ 262. I have been looking to see when the body production went from the Ohio company to the Studebaker plant in South Bend, as my auto was made in Aug 1962 I assume (not a sound practice) that I have an Ohio assembled body. Does anyone have any solid data on the change over date / body # ? I have several Avanti books, combed Bob Johnstone's site and I can can't find the info. Thanks for the help. Sherm / Green Bay

It is my understanding that Studebaker never took over producing the only Avanti bodies. They were produced by both until the end. If you have the production sheets for your Avanti it will differentiate between South Bend and Ashtubula built bodies. It is said that the Ashtubula built bodies had better quality.

Avanti bodies made by Studebaker had body number starting at RQ5001. All bodies with lower numbers were MFG made.

Many thanks to all, I have NO info on my auto outside of the registry info in Bob Johnston's site. I am trying to find any folks that have its checkered past ( like how / why was its engine replaced with a 3E4248 !!??). Thanks Sherm / Green Bay
