That looks more like an engine number than a Serial Number.
If the V is a G, then it is a South Bend 1947 Champion.
If you are referring to the 1953 Commander that you just purchased from New York, that is the engine number. At that time (in NY and many states), cars were registered & insured (no title then) by their engine number.
To get the production order from the SNM, you will need the Serial Number.
Hopefully, the engine hasn't been changed or you may have "hoops" to jump through when you go to register, title & insure the car..

It’s a Massachusetts title, that’s the number used. Let me rephrase, I’m ordering the production order once the car gets here and I get the number off the pillar.

I just used NY as an example and because I thought that was where the car was from. MANY states used the engine number for an identifier at that time.

          V258130 checks out as a 1953 Commander 232 V8 Engine.

          Found right here: http://www.studebakerdriversclub.com/V8EngineID.asp

This Number will be Stamped INTO the rear Top corner of the Block on the machined flat Pad.

UPDATE: Correction; I was thinking 1951 & '52 for some reason, the Stamping is on the Left Front Top Corner of the Block on '53 and On V8's.

Yes, and for the new buyer's sake, I hope that the car that he just purchased still carries its original engine.

Car Serial Number 8,290,001 was the first 1953 South Bend Commander, so 8,338,201 just makes it one of that Model Year's Production.
I would call it somewhat Late 1953.

8,354,901 is the first 1954 Commander, all numbers that can be found in your Chassis or Body Parts Catalog.

I have owned several 1953 Commanders. One that I knew since new, bought from the original owner and rebuilt/"restored" was/is Serial Number 833ABCD (I don't remember the last digits, but extremely close to this car).

The Serial Number indicates a South Bend build, yet it has the trim of either a Vernon (LA) build or a two-tone car. I assume that the car was originally one of the two-tone combinations.

The production order will give you lots of information.

Now the agonizing wait for the production order to know the options and color of the car as built.
