  • Maintenance cost comparisons.....

....I'm starting to wonder:.....would keeping a "Mistress" be less expensive/frustrating than keeping my '64 GT Hawk on the road? (aka as "problem child").

Since I got her out of the paint shop in August I've driven her less than fifty miles and have had to 1)replace the water pump, 2)replace the power steering cyl., 3)rebuilt the power steering pump and 4)deal with a leaking front brake caliper..........

It helps to vent....still waiting for that light at the end of the tunnel....someday....maybe....will I live that long?

I doubt your wife would approve a mistress over a car.

Well lets see, that still ONLY leaves the:

      Engine
      Transmission
      P/S Pump
      Rear Brakes
      Three more Calipers
      Power Brake Unit
      Front Suspension
      Center Bellcrank Bearings
      Rear Axle

Per your list, still to be rebuilt after 55 Years.
Trying to be the bearer of Good News, but it isn't working too well.

Come to think about it, at 75 I have about that many "Body Parts" that need replacement as well.

Get yourself a mistress that knows how to repair cars, then have her maintain your Hawk. If she would also help cook and clean, then your wife would likely be okay with having her around.

A lot depends on age and general overall condition.
            American iron, real old school
With two tone paint, it sure is cool

Its got 8 cylinders and uses them all
With an overdrive that just won't stall

With a 4 barrel carb and dual exhausts
With 4.23 gears it can really get lost

Its got safety belts and I ain't scared
The brakes are good and the tires are fair.

Tried to sell her, but got no taker
I"ll just keep driving my Studebaker

Potential mistress or are you talking about the car?

                I would guess: both.

Many people think a nice looking paint job covers for a long period of neglect. That's why when I tell people a restoration is far more than body and paint. It's total remanufacture.
