We have a 1954 Commander Starliner hardtop (232 ci engine, Detroit Gear automatic) that I've had the recurring problem of it dying out on the road. It will stall and then refuse to restart. I have installed an electric fuel pump back by the tank with a new fuel filter feeding a rebuilt mechanical fuel pump. The stalling usually occurred during hot weather, and I attributed it to vapor lock; hence the electric fuel pump. The last three times I've had the car out, I've had to have it rollbacked home. The latest time was today. It will run fine for a while -- as much as 60 miles, but when it stalls, it's done. I drained the gas tank last week and put ethanol free 90 octane fuel in it and thought I had the problem licked. But today, after about 6 miles of driving with several stops at lights and stop signs with no problem, it stalled at a stop sign and refused to restart. Ether didn't help a bit; the engine didn't even kick. I always carry spare parts with me, and thinking that maybe the coil (which I beleive is at least 10 years old) was going, I put a new one in. Nothing! I know I flooded the engine, but even after sitting for at least an hour, it wouldn't restart. I haven't been able to check anything else, because after AAA Plus (thank goodness for that) brought me home and deposited the car in our garage, it's still not starting. I know it's getting gas; I can smell it, and if I leave the electric pump on too long, gas starts coming out the hole that the accelerator pump shaft comes out of.
I used to have this problem with E10 87 octane fuel, but not as often I'm having now. I'm at my wits end; can anybody help me?
