how many shifts should i feel.thanks in advance.. 64 cruiser. 289 v/8 . i only feel one at 30 or 40 miles an hour.

Assuming that you are referring to a stock automatic transmission, one. It is a three speed transmission that under normal conditions starts in second.

1 good 289 w/ auto should shift up to 3rd @ ~ 15-20 mph (book says 13-18) with medium/light throttle. When floored at a stop, you should get 2 shifts 1/2 & 2/3... at later speeds. You can obtain correct shift points by adjusting the throttle to tranny rod...GL

I measured one of the two that I have here, from the lower edge of the cap to tip of the stick is 31 and 5/8". Lou Cote

Lots of folks recommend type FA fluid (Ford) I've used this and it will move the shift point up and it will be more abrupt. (also FA recommended by John Erb and the CUNDN people for superchargers)
