Studebaker carriage near New Paltz, NY

We came to the Mohonk Mountain House near New Paltz for a family winter getaway with my in-laws. This is an old pile of a hotel dating back to the 1860’s on top of Shawangunk Ridge facing the Catskill Mountains. In their old (1888) barn museum, I found a Studebaker carriage, perhaps a Stanhope model, with other carriages, blacksmith gear, farm tools, etc. The Studebaker nameplate is still on the rear axle. Quite a place, quite a view!

I was there many years ago , There was a small lake in front where you could rent boats . And the view was great , Glad to hear it still exists , I drove a Sunbeam Alpine up there from Tom's River , Ed

I have been to the main Mountain House many times, ate there and walked the grounds. I never went to the barn. What is strange, to me, is that I knew the previous General Manager there for many years. She never mentioned this to me even though she knew of my strong interest in Studebakers. We have even talked cars. She had a "new" style two seat Thunderbird. I guess that either she wasn't aware that the carriage is a Studebaker or didn't make the connection to my interest in Studebaker cars.

I looked up that Corning Buggy in my 1910 catalogue & it looks the same. The price listed at $150.

For Ron, the maker of the lady’s phaeton with red wheels was not identified on the info plaque, but it is not Studebaker. The leather fenders were to keep mud off the passengers. There are about 15 or 20 wagons, carriages, and sleighs in the barn, some very fancy with beveled glass windows. They were used to haul hotel guests up the mountain from the local train station and for rides on the 60 miles of carriage roads on the original 7,500 acre property. In summer, the hotel still puts many of the carriages in service. The movie “The Road to Wellville” about Kellogg was filmed here a few years ago using many of the wagons and carriages as props.

Looks like a great place to visit, and I'd want to go for a nice long carriage ride.
Two summers ago I got to ride in an 1860's stagecoach, and I sure enjoyed that.
If anyone ever gets the chance for such a ride, be sure to go for it.

Gary A. - Imagine making many trips up the mountain to the Mountain House in the Winter (snow and ice on that narrow ledge of a road - the current road is the improved version). Many of those trips I made in stretch limousines.
