Been talking with a guy for a good two years ago about a rust 64 R1 Cruiser that he had in the weeks. I think the story goes, he bought it but the previous owner said it wouldnt run. When he got it home, sure enough it wouldnt run. He took it a part and found a busted crank. He then took the engine all a part. When I went down to get it yesterday, we found most of the parts except for the dizzy, oil pan and of course, the block. Its no where to be found. He is still looking, so time will tell.

What i did get is here. Only thing I couldnt show yet was the 3.53 rear end.

I enjoyed the photos and I have a Question so break out your Book of knowlege. What is a R1, ok I can tell from the badging on the car that it is an engine. But what made it special?

I will let the experts answer the R1 thing.

I pulled out all the parts to see the stuff. I just uploaded 9 more pictures.

I guess the 2nd previous owner had started to restore the car. There is the new dash, plus what looks to be a lot if not complete interior in a box. Also some paper work from 1985, a new TT emblem and sticker about what to use in the rear.

What a shame the block is MIA-however you got the treasure (project) to go with now, maybe the block will show up! Many dollars of valuable parts there!

I would bet that the block can be saved! (??)

Who cares about the block, any full flow block will work unless you want numbers matching. likewise with the crank, any late 289 crank will work. Good find!

Randy, an R1 was a 289 on mild steroids. Different pistons and cam from a standard 289. Other minor enhancements as well - to the engine.
As well as the badging, engine numbers identified R1s from standard 289s. In Larks & Hawks, the engine #s started with a JT prefix. "JTS" for R2s (supercharged) In Avantis R was the prefix. RS for the supercharged versions.:)

Miscreant adrift in
the BerStuda Triangle!!

Nate, yeah, I would LOVE to have a numbers matching engine for the Avanti, but for some reason, the previous owner of the Avanti has completely screwed me out of that pleasure. Hence is the reason for at least getting an R1 for it.

Lots of good things still on the car though, includeing the 160 Speedo and tach. Also traction bars and something else going over the rear ends. I guess some sort of anti-hope things. Gearing is a 3.54 and with the new TT badge I found in the car, I assume its a TT rear end. Got to jack it up and check it. Also front disk brakes for a rainy day :) My SuperLark has a 3.33 TT ....Hmmmmmm

First thing I may part with will be the new interior I found. But have to figure out what all it is. One tag I found says 1359937x3. Must be four pieces in it and one or two more wraped in a paper bag. Bench seat front and rear with center armrest.

Mr. David Engle; I just might be interested in those old weathered R1 badges/emblems... ;) (Even though I don't have an R1. [xx(])

Is all this 'extra' stuff the HD suspension stuff???
