I was looking at the early 2 barrel manifolds for the V8s and it looks like they could be machined for two flavors of carburetors. One is for the AAU and WW carburetors. So what was the mystery carburetor with a bigger base and three not quite symmetrical tabs that apparently could be machined for but was never put into production?

Machine the pad flat, drill and tap the four holes in the corners (as measured by the actual carburetor baseplate dimensions !), open the throttle bore openings also per the throttle plate and install an OEM style WCFB 4 barrel carburetor.
And then you also have the ability, with the help of an aluminum adapter, to install an Edelbrock/Carter 4 barrel carburetor.

There's a couple of people that frequent this board that can do the work for you or you can buy outright from them if you don't have the capability.

Doug is referencing the early 2-bbl-only intake and it is probable Mike is referring to the late 2-bbl intake which was the nearly the same casting as the 4-bbl, but machined differently to take the 2-bbl carb.
