Decided to pass on the nice wagon after winning the snipe bid on this truck. May go with a V8 with the AC.

Hmmm, I wonder how many of these actually were equiped with the big six? I am going to guess very few...

Looks like nice find.

Not many at all. Most had the 170 6. (Such as my 4E1-112 Scotsman)

My grandad has 3 other 59 Scotsman PU's, and they were all 170 6 powered but one, which had a 259 V8.

If it were mine, I'd keep a Big 6 in it. That's just a really good engine IMO. But, if I had a good 289 laying around... [8D]

The whole concept of the Scotsman can be described as austere. By its very nature it is spartan and since it appears to be in good shape I would keep it simple and stock.

What the h*** is a "snipe bid"?

JDP

A snipe bid is a bid placed automatically by a computer program near the end of the auction, in my case 6 seconds. I enter the auctions I want to bid on, and how much and the program bids for me, without me being near a computer. In the case of a cheap truck this AM, I'd even forgotten that I'd tossed in a low ball bid until I got a e-mail telling me I'd won.
By using a snipe program, you don't give anyone enough time to outbid you unless your bid is less then their proxy bid.

Heck, JP, if you have a V8 and 3spd/OD....put it in the truck. Especially if you're wanting to run AC. Hang a fiberglass snout on it too. I think that makes C cabs look really "mean" and tough. Just my preference.

You probably can guess my opinion, since I just had a small six rebuilt in a way to make it more powerful. If it were mine, I would ask Bill Cathcart if he has ways to make the big six even more powerful than it already is. He could do stuff internally and leave the carburetor and exhaust header as stock, so that any meet judges wouldn't know about the internal power modifications.

I just think that trucks with these classic sixes should keep them, whenever possible.

This truck already has a custom interior, paint and mag wheels, so keeping the engine is not that much of a issue. I'm just looking to make a nice driver out of it again over the winter and find a new home for her.

I understand. Well, try to save that Big Six engine for someone who buys a truck with a Champion Six. They'll appreciate the difference, I'm sure!

That is an interesting photographic effect on the paint vs. everything in background, or even other parts of the truck. The license plate is not an old California plate, but I don't think it is an old Michigan license plate either. Mostly I'm just curious what the truck will be like when it gets delivered.

All you have to do is decide what you are willing to pay and after that set up a proxy bid near the end of the auction. Then...If you lose...you lose.
Doing it near the end of the auction helps keep the nibblers away.
I snipe everything I buy. But if I win... then it's pretty much that I wanted it more than everyone else. If you lose because you tried to bid again in the last few seconds then I think it makes you use the proxy. If I get it cheaper because you didn't then good on me mate.
The main thing is to decide what something is worth to you and bid only that by proxy. ;)
