View Full Version : Pondering a '59 4E11

Re: '59 4E11, 3/4 ton with commander 6 and 3spd/OD. What rear gears is this likely to have? Any thoughts on a truck like this for "driving" as opposed to say the same truck with a V8 and 3spd/OD? If a guy had a 289V8 and a 5spd/OD trans to drop in this truck, would it be a smart swap? I've always heard that the Commander 6 was a good highway engine. I wonder if there would actually be any significant fuel mileage advantage with the big 6 as opposed to a Stude V8? I'd like to hear what you guys think on this.

If it's the one on ebay, you should hit the BIN, I know of 3 or 4 of us that are pondering that truck. Since it needs a engine anyway, I'd swap in a V8 if I win it. If you have a 5 speed OD, that would be a great swap , but I can't affor the $1000-$1500 for that trans and it has no adavantage over the OD for normal driving.

You're gonna have to start the JP Museum here shortly! I REALLY like that Red V8 Scotsman on ebay. I like mine better though, mainly because it is mine. :D

Just got two checks from ebay sales today, so I'm on the hunt again. I ended another auction early for a high offer rather then see it go nuts for the guys proxy bid, Ebay is out of control.

Sorry for going off topic. ;)

Reply to the first post: I too would keep the Big 6 with OD if the truck has that now. Those Big 6's are tough, strong engines. The 2R16 flat bed dump truck I owned for a shirt while had the Big 6 with a 4 speed. (I can claim to have owned a 4 speed Stude; and an R series too! :D) That truck, as big and clumsy as it was/is, will go down the road all day long and haul anything you through at it. Good motors, to say the least! And it's hard to beat a 3 speed OD!!!

Would anyone care to hazzard a guess as to what rear gears a '59 3/4 ton with the big six and overdrive might have come with?

I'm not sure about a 3/4 ton, but my '59 1/2 ton with 170 6 and OD had a 4:27. We upgraded it to a 3:53 from a '60 Hawk. At least now I can get from the driveway to the road without shifting to 2nd. :D
