  • Allan Songer's R1 is alive and well in MOTOWN.

Re; Allan's comment in the thread about R1 engines and today's fuel. He said quote ..I built a 299 cu in R1 motor with flat tops and small chamber heads back in the early 90's and ran it pretty hard on 92 octane unleaded pump gas. I'm pretty sure the motor is still together and still running hard up in Michigan somewhere. I guess he doesn't believe me, the current owner of his Blue Mist Super Lark clone. So can I get some witnesses to tell him that his engine is still running. Bob Palma, Ted Harbit, Gorge Krem, Gary Sanders have all seen it. Allan built our engine super strong. Hopefully he will share the details with the forum. Thanks, Huck (actually 3 blocks out of Detroit)

It was 14-15 years ago, but this is what I remember off hand:

Castillo nitrided crank. Polished, shot peened and resized rods.
All new rod and main fasteners. Fully balanced. Align honed.

I built it like I used to build Lotus Twin-Cams that would rev to 7500.

Thank you Jerry and Allan. Allan you really made the car pretty too. I get so many compliments on it. Everyone, from kids to little old ladies, likes the car. A few years ago I was on Detroit's Belle Isle, for a wedding reception. Got to transport my Nephew and his new bride. Anyway it was a warm Summer evening and tough kids in their old school Chevys, with big rims, rule the night. They too, respected my Stude. So Jerry, you must be the guy that my friend Toby knows from the Eagles Club. Look for us in the Spring. Unlike Allan, we must wait for the road salt to wash away. At least I have a nice CA car. Thank you Mr. Songer. Peace, Huck PS When is your wife's truck going to be in Turning Wheels??
