  • Does Anyome Know?

What became of the two R4 powered Zip Vans built for the Postal Department, as exhibition drag racers. They were intended to publicize the new five digit Zip Code. Paint jobs were red, white and blue; with the cartoon figure "Mr. Zip" and South Bend's Zip Code. They may have been alcohol fueled or boosted by nitrous oxide. Possibly they were stashed in a warehouse, or surplus lot; or even put to work delivering mail in some remote area. At this date, does anyone know?

I purchased both of them from a disgruntled postal employee and I am waiting for the right time to put them on ebay as "barn finds", thereby getting at least double what they are worth.

They are stored next to my experimental aluminum big block 340 Avanti, the one with the triple paxton blowers.

Every day I learn something new on this forum. I thought they were scrapped when the factory closed.

I'm thinkin' that there must'a been a dozen of 'em built.
Besides the ones already mentioned- we have three of them up here.

Two are even still in service~ alongside the two with R3 power.
We have one of each just for show as well...

The local scrap yard here gave me $100 each for the three I had.

You're all wrong! There was only one built. It is in my garage. I swapped out the R4 for a 169 six cylinder and restored it to stock condition. It will be ready for the upcoming NW Overdrive. The R4 is going in to my Champ.
