    We don't even know if you are removing it from steel or fiberglass and if you are referring to an original fiberglass mat, the sprayed on sound deadening or something else (after build).

    In general terms, I would say; scrape off what you can and then sand down the rest.

        Isn't that more of a sound deadner then an insulation? If it's the sprayed on material I'm thinking of, the best way is with a sharp scraper and just take your time. I use a narrow one because they seem to work better doing a narrow pathway in the material. After scraping it can be washed with a solvent to get rid of what's left. DO NOT use any heat during any process or you will end up with a lumpy, wavy hood.
