Fuel System: 54 Commander gas mileage

232, stromberg carb, auto trans DG 200. Looks like I am getting about 11 MPG. Is that pretty typical for a starliner 54?
This car have no power

Ignition = Ok with Pertronix
Main jet = 0,57 (sparks colour, just light brown)
because normal main jet are 0,49 not enough fuel, I was shaking while driving, even top speed 72 miles/h, sparks colour were white, and 12 MPG.
Brake is ok, she rolls freely
I checked this afternoon the timing camshaft = ok

You seem to have good skills and basic understanding, but something is definitely not as it should be. A '54 Commander should get at least 16 MPG on the highway and run at least 90 MPH.

Have you done a compression test?

Confirmed at least 30 degrees full centrifugal advance
Confirmed at least 12 degrees vacuum advance?

At 90mph, 16 MPG would be about right. My '53 no longer houses its 232, but forty years ago when it did, I could get 22-23 MPG when I wasn't driving like a maniac. And that was with the DG200 and 3.54 rear. And you should be able to achieve 72mph just with second gear.

Full ignition timing advance is 45° at 2600 rpm.
I must check the compression, it is an idea, but normally this engine was rebuild, i found the old piston ring set in the trunk.

45 BTDC sounds like too much advance to me. I would agree with the numbers Brad posted.
My 1952 Land Cruiser with 232 and overdrive got 24 MPH on the highway when driving 60 to 65, and the car had plenty of power.

With your help, i found the problem, at least one.
It is the distribor, it is mad.
(vaccum advance disconnected)
At 550 rpm, advance perfect
At 800 rpm, advance +6 (perfect)
At idle speed, 550 rpm, advance +9
I removed it, I cleaned it, same problem, i ordered parts for rebuild it.

Interesting find. Were the Mechanical advance springs missing or stretched, the weights worn and jammed or loose?

The distributor should be a normally dependable, early Delco Remy used in most GM Cars, not a later type Delco Window Dist. that was way less quality and durability.

Sounds more like someone installed a Prestolite Dist. from a '62 to '64 V8.

.057 jets seem pretty big for a 232 Stromberg. Certainly running rich will effect mileage and won't really produce more power.

It is the original Delco Remy on, 64 years ago and 140 000 miles
I ordered
Camshaft and cam
Weights and 2 springs
I will compare wear with new parts, in two weeks.
