Sports Writer Mike Lopresti is a regular contributor to Indianapolis Business Journal. He's an excellent writer; his columns are always enjoyable no matter what the topic.

Here's one he put together to contribute to this May's Indianapolis 500 celebration, "Indianapolis 500 by the Numbers." It's really interesting; well done. 'Thought you folks might enjoy it:

Ray Harroun, of course; they were all rookies in the first 500! BP

          Slightly more difficult trivia:

          1. Other than Harroun, how many drivers have won Indy in their rookie start?

          and a bit more difficult:

          2. When did LeRoy Yarbrough run his last lap at Indy?

          and a bit more difficult:

          3. Who built the bodywork on Wilbur Shaws' 1937 winner?

          4. And for the real trivia fans:What is the serial number of the Shaw Maserati engine in the Speedway museum basement?

          5. And one for the Hoosiers: Who was that last Indiana born driver to win at Indy?

At least you were brave enough to try. The correct answers are AFAIK

Rookie Winners: Harroun, Goux, THomas, Lockhart, Sounders, Meyer*, Petillo, Hill, Montoya, Castroneves, Rossi

*Meyer had driven previously as a relief driver, but his first start was '28 when he won.

LeeRoy's last lap was in 1971 when he crashed hard into the wall during practice.

Myron Stevens, metalcrafter par excellance built the body for Shaw's Pay Car among many other famous cars. A minor error by Stevens installing the hood hinges caused Shaw to make a lengthy pit stop when he was leading in '36, however he forgave Stevens and came back to notch his first win in '37.

The serial number is 3033. It should be 3032, which was the original factory engine that had been destroyed by frost damage during shipping, but the engine in the display car is now 3032, and is undamaged, while the basement engine has a frost cracked block. 'tis a mystery.

Wilbur Shaw was the last Hoosier to win.
