I also like the '56 sedan 'red flare' rail lamps and the exhaust ports exiting through the bumper, kind of like the senior Packards but nicer. And the front styling has always reminded me of '55-56 Thunderbird's.

My '56 Commander Sedan has a single exhaust from the motor. I get a kick out of the fake exhaust pipe on the other side.

It's a great deal and will be a nice one for someone!
I also have a pair of NOS Provincial emblems that could go with the car if someone on the forum buys it.

Can anyone explain why Studebaker created what Rich describes as the "Package Shelf" at the back of the body?

It seems if they made the body a half a foot (or so) longer to eliminate it they would add a few extra cubic feet of cargo space, a good selling point.

I don't know if it's 'fact', but one theory I have is that Studebaker wanted the wagons to resemble their sedans more. Think about it~
When comparing the line up of '56 to '57/8 you'll see that the '56 wagon bodies were shorter and still looked very much like they were left over from '54 or '55. In '57 Studebaker spent just enough money on tooling to lengthen the quarter panel, but not enough to do the same with that same old shell from '54. Plus- they had already spent a bunch of money to make said shell into the four door wagons that the public wanted, and the market demanded they have.

But honestly- I think if they had done what you say- the four door wagons would'a looked funny because I'll bet you Studebaker would not have put them on the longer wheelbase chassis they would have needed to 'look right'.

Are you SURE that is Champion Six (Pelham)?

A Commander V8 Parkview looks the same until you check the Serial Number Plate, Body Tag or Engine?

I am new to the SDC. Studerich what should the tags say? Thanks SN-60. I assumed because the tailgate says Pelham and the fenders say Champion that I bought a Pelham? It is a standard Transmission also. Seem to be missing the radio delete plate.

The Body Tag on the Right side Firewall would say 56G-D4 for a Champion Pelham and a G prefix Serial Number on the Door post Serial Number Plate.

If it has all 3 Nameplates it probably was a Pelham Champion Six, I figured there was no Engine so you could not tell by that.

If there is a Hole in the Left Front Fender rear corner though the Cowl for the Antenna, it is probably missing the Optional Radio.

I have always loved the styling of the '53 through '57 Studebakers. I also like the '62-'63s as well. '56 has to be my favorite of all years though. Great styling, headroom, legroom, and cargo capacity. My hope is to get Bess ('56 Parkview) back on the road this year. However, so far, that wish hasn't been granted. Work'in towards it though.

As sleek, long, low and just plain SEXY as your wagon is going to look.
Could you PLEASE extent those rocker panels back that 1" to 1 1/4" to line up with the rear wheel well.
That unsightly jog makes my eyes ache every time I allow myself to look at it on any Studebaker.
