  • 49 2R5 freebie....Turbo time

Hi I Am James and am new here but not to Studebakers (Dads fault) any how here is my truck freebie I have been tinkering with for 2 yrs It was just too underpowered for me so I am adding a Turbo. Currently I am designing the Dist. when that's done I will get it back in the truck. Hope you like it.

      More pics..

this project has kind of spiraled out of control but its been fun. Carb is a Mikuni Hsr 48mm Flatslide and will support 250-300hp. Oil pump is modified to exit out of the top for full flow filtering everything is 304L Stainless. Glad you like it. Its kinda wacky I know...

very cool thanks for the kind words. this is more or less my "dial in engine" i dont expect it to "live" to aweful long its a 50 car engine been rebuilt a few times. .060 over cast pistons .030 under crank everything is fresh but it does have Wiped out lifter bores whomever did the machine work shouldnt have. But im gonna go with it for now. what ive done is replace the valve guides with ones i machined for teflon stem seals to try to contain the oil hurricane thats happening in the lifter valley due to the shot lifter bores. i also fitted it with SS Ex. valves and nos intakes. I didnt Hard seat the block as i would have liked, I figured dont waste the time on this block. Also added an Alum. Cam gear. so most of my Modifications are removeable for another block (last weekend i picked up a service replacement Crate nos 1955 185" ci) so im not overly concerned with longevitey on this eng. since i just got the best Champion motor i could want to start with for a build. this motor may suprise me and last a while so long as i try to keep boost reasonable.

Love it. Hope it works out and lasts a long while. Is your dad on this Forum? We have a couple members on here from Petaluma.

When that thing is out of the shop it will get tons of attention anywhere it goes. Maybe you will develop some useful info for us less talented folks.

More power? Upgrade the brakes first, please!

Regarding the brakes that was the first thing i had to do. This truck was last touched in 76 and is the most totally worn out stude i have ever seen but also totally Rust Free!!Because it was 100% all there including the 4 hubcaps i wanted to keep her all stock (That didn't last long). So first i did the brakes 90% went in the trash as unsavable all 4 drums were shot, self adj. pieces were shot. So i went to Studebakers West in redwood city and was able to get all the brake pieces (very interesting self Adj. brakes on these trucks). but still no drums. I came across an article about useing 76 Chevrolet rear truck drums on all 4 and machining the factory hubs to fit. so some machining and 20 new studs and lug nuts later the brakes are All new and work really really well. with getting her running and out on the road my driveway Tbones into a 55 mph trucking route that never sleeps. i discovered quickly that this truck is very underpowered. So im not looking to race at bonnievile i just want to get to 55mph a little sooner.

                      a few more pictures

Im sure not the first Studebaker truck to be a Dwarf goat shelter. Also Bolting in the Stock Dana 41 I rebuilt with new brakes and 76 Chevy truck drum modification note Lever shocks this truck is early production 49. Then some shots of the 185" Crate motor I just picked up (Just as Studebaker nailed it together) Amazing you can still find things like this it just blows my mind.

It may not be the fastest but it's high on the list of the coolest. Can't wait to see it.

So Im getting the engine bay freshened up looking much better now.
Oliver tractor green from Tractor supply it was too cheap to pass up.
I have a thing for Green trucks. The Brand X C.O.E. is my 52 all original with a 235 6cyl
His name is Mr. Pickles also my dwarf goats and my rescue pooch Roxie looking on
Oh and my planed dash layout using a glove box door I am reluctant to cut the dash but I think it will look good and be easy to monitor the important vital signs.

Engine is in im a happy boy

I was able to get the engine back in on Sun. which made me very happy. Also a few pictures of my NO leak side covers I made on Fri. they need a little more beautifying but they hide behind the turbo setup so nobody will notice anyways.

I'm sure glad you painted the engine compartment. It looks great with that beautiful engine. Keep us advised on future improvements.
