I now own E7 17449, saw it on Ebay and couldn't believe no one had "scooped" it up, truck has Volare sub frame, R-1 engine, Chevy 5 speed, 34,000 original mile truck from Oregon, been garaged and hardly driven in the last 30 years, OMG it is nice!

7E7-17043 - Not sure of original wheel base or trim - might simply be the cab on a brand-X. For sale on Craigslist - Dec. 2014.

?Nice looking truck, albeit a touch rusty. Still very nice. Is that a CHEVY motor under the hood? Looks like a 3/4 ton or one ton chassis conversion. "Beast" is a good nick-name for this...

Is a 3/4 ton - possible a company truck from the tag on the windshield post. Pretty rare to be an auto - maybe the work was pretty hard and they wanted them to enjoy the ride... And I think you are correct - bow-tie power plant.

I have one. I think it's a 7E12. Project truck, 3/4 ton, 259 V8, 4 speed, long bed. One day it will be reborn with a 289 backed by a NV 4500 5 speed transmission. I don't have the serial number at hand.

No problem - when you get the VIN - just post again and I can put the information on the first post.

Thanks Neil - I cannot quite make out the VIN - could you give me that info? I would say any Champ truck with automatic is going to be rare - and few survivors...

I know of a 62 Champ out here in So Cal that has an automatic too. I'd be really tempted but I fear the wrath of Code Enforcement if I added any more here & that's not counting the 3 or 4 cars still at my old house that need to make it here yet.

    7E10-39458 - 122 WB - T4 cab - for sale on ebay, late July, 2015

3/4 ton with P2 box, OHV I6, climitizer, and four way flashers. If it was shipped domestically, it is only one of 172 sold in the states for the 1962 Champ, 7E, model year.

That brown looks outstanding! It reminds me of the 69 Toyota truck I had years ago that I painted "Nutmeg Brown Firemist" , a Caddy color. I wouldn't be surprised if this truck had that same color. With the Ranger bed & it's stance it looks perfect in my eyes.

The guy who bought this truck blew the engine driving it back from Reno to his home in Middleton, Ca. A drain plug dropped out on the way. I ended up buying and picking it up from him a few days before the town nearly burned down. I hope his family and home survived. I just finished putting in the rebuilt 259. It has a 4 speed on the floor, and drives really nice.

My guess they are from some generic vendor like J.C. Whitney or Western Auto from "back in the day."

    1962 Champ 7E7-122
    VIN: E7-16887
    289 4bbl currently
    3 spd OD
    Riviera Blue
    Power Brakes
    Sliding Rear Window
    Pushbutton AM Radio
    Climatizer
    Oil bath air cleaner

This Champ has been in our family since new. My Grandfather and my Dad took the train to South Bend in December, 1961 and picked it up at the factory. Below is a photo of my grandfather, Russell Griggs, posing with the Champ at the gas pumps at the Studebaker plant (note new Hawks, Larks, and trucks in the background). He used it in his beekeeping business in Southwestern Iowa until he retired in the late 1970s. It was originally equipped with a 259 V8, but the original engine was replaced with a 289 short block from Standard Surplus in the early 1970s. It was repainted in 1980. It currently has a 4bbl carburetor and R-series chrome valve covers. The family owned a lot of Studebakers through the years and my Dad posed the below photo of the "roster" as it stood in the early 1960's (1950 2 Ton flatbed, 1955 President, 1962 Champ, 1964 Cruiser). I was given the Champ in 2004, when my grandparents entered an assisted living facility and it was brought to my home in Louisville, KY. I later rebuilt the brakes, polished the paint, and mounted new radial tires on GM van wheels. It was used as a truck while my Grandpa owned it and has plenty of "battle scars" as well as a little rust in the cab floor and the tailgate hinge area. Today it lives in my garage and earns its keep by occasionally hauling building materials and other bulky items. My Dad and I have taken it to car shows and drove it on Drive your Studebaker Day a few years ago.

Thanks very much Scott for posting those WAY Cool Old Pictures.
I love that "In the Day" rare picture of the Delivery area of the Plant, and also the Farmland view of all 4 family Studebakers.

I always save the significant Pictures like these to my "Stude Pics" Folder where I have Pics of every Post War Year in their own "Folders".

You can see that your Grandfather opted for a Pair of Snow Tires to be installed by the Factory Delivery Prep. Dept. to safely get it home in December.

That is quite a Change/different Look, from Jade Green and Deluxe Cab Stainless Hub Caps, to Baby Blue and Standard Cab Hub Caps.

Thanks sgriggs - appreciate all the information, especially the photos. Very few people can say they have a photo of their vehicle leaving the factory, much less with a family member taking the photo and another in it. Had a quick question - what was the original color and was the truck ordered to the specs you gave or was it chosen off the surplus lot the way it was? Love the traction tires on the rear as well. And don't be a stranger - I'm not too far to the east.

Thanks, Rich. I think the white hubcaps may be the originals that were painted (not sure why). I still have the original wheels and hubcaps in my garage, although they are a little 'beat up' looking now.

I'm not sure about the original color. I've got a file folder at home with all of the records that my Grandpa had on the truck. I'll have to dig through it and see if there is an original order document, etc. that mentions the color. I'll check and report back.

Do you ever drive your Champ to Louisville? I was pretty surprised to see a light blue Champ very similar to mine (albeit with a stepside box) on Browns Lane a few years ago. Could that have been you?
