  • Western Washington IDYSD ideas? (now with Whatcom SDC's plan!!!)

So, what are folks in Western Washington doing for IDYSD?

At this point my club has yet to commit to anything because we'll still be on the high that we get from putting on our three day WeekEnd of Fun the week prior. Details about that event are here~ http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.c...757#post760757

But this thread is about IDYSD. I know there are many folks here on the Forum who do not belong to one of the local 'WetSide Washington' SDC Chapters. What are you planning to do for September 14th?

      OOOOPS!!!

I'm shocked no one from Seattle or North Puget Sound SDC has jumped in yet.

In the meantime- Whatcom County now has plans in work for a tour to Whidbey Island.
      Details will follow very soon...

Following are the details for my Chapter's International Drive Your Studebaker Day event on Whidbey Island.

At 10:00 AM we will meet in the parking lot at the NE corner of Old Fairhaven Parkway and 30th Street.
(it is now a Whatcom Farmer's Co-Op store I believe)

From there we will caravan down into Fairhaven and on to Chuckanut Drive.
We will head South only as far as Highway 20, then turn right towards Whidbey Island.
A stop is planned at the gas station located on the right of Hwy 20 just about three miles south of the Deception Pass Bridge.
(Soundview Lane/West Troxell Road is the crossroad)
11:30 is our target departure time from there- next stop is the PBY Memorial Foundation http://pbymf.org/ on the 'Seaplane Base' in Oak Harbor.
Arrangements will be made for our visit- hopefully to include special parking for our Studes.
If traveling out of the group- just let folks know you are headed to the museum. It ought not be a problem.

After exploring what they have to offer, including an actual PBY flying boat, folks who desire will leave the museum at 1:30PM-
heading south down the Island to Neil's Clover Patch in Bayview for a late lunch. (this portion is about 40 miles each way)

The full trip will end up being nearly 200 miles round trip from Bellingham-- so gas up and be ready to drive!!!

This link is a rough Google Maps version of our route~ http://goo.gl/maps/irnHj
PLEASE NOTE~ Some of said route may vary a teeny tiny bit.
Sweet Pea and I spent about three years of our lives stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
        We know our way around...

For anyone in SW Washington (I think there are one or two others on the forum) there will be a gathering at the Napavine McDonalds at exit 72 on I 5. Large parking lot, plenty of room to stand around and look. That McDonalds also sells Tillamook ice cream, worth the trip.

I feel the need to provide an update to this information.

So long as nothing changes between now and IDYSD here's what you need to get on base~
            • driver's license
            • registration
            • proof of insurance

This ought not be an issue, as you're supposed to be carrying this paperwork anyway.
I plan to be the first car in line in hopes to smooth the process, but have it at the ready just in case.
As of this morning no paperwork is needed for your passengers.

I am sure there will be more to follow on this as the date draws near, so stay tuned!!!

No need to drive clear up to Bellingham just to turn around an drive back. Meet us along Highway 20 somewhere between the Farmhouse and the split to Whidbey Island. If this tour happens, we ought not be too hard to spot!!!

As for the Bell's place- it's generally only open by appointment when they have a large group (usually car clubs) or for their annual open house. The open house was this past Saturday, BTW...

My Chapter's tour of Whidbey Island went somewhat as planned.
We drove a very scenic route to the Island, and met up with some more folks once we got there. We also got a chance to talk with Bill and his son Joe Hamilton. They do fuel injection set ups for odd rides just like ours. Once everyone was accounted for I lead the group to the old 'Seaplane Base' in Oak Harbor. We toured the PBY Memorial Museum AND their PBY-5A flying boat. Next we headed into Oak Harbor for some eats. While there Tom Smith got invited to something that sounded fun, so we joined him in a cruise down the Island a bit further. You should've seen the look on the Metro owner's faces when our six Studebakers crashed their party!!! From there everyone but me headed home. I went further South, and rode a Washington State ferry back to 'the mainland'. My high school class was having it's 25th Reunion. I got lucky and parked up front of the place- Betsy proudly showing off her parking stickers from Cascade High School. It made for a late night (early morning actually) return home in the fog, but she got me back in one piece.

All told Betsy gave me nearly 200 miles of smiles this past Saturday.
And an unknown number of thumbs up, and StudeLessons at the gas station, in the ferry line, on the ferry, at the tavern, at the rest stops, and anywhere else we stopped.
