  • Engine: R1 Breather Tube

I recently installed the R1 breather tube on the side of the R1 clone oil pan. Is the breather tube suppose to be clear or is there suppose to be course steel wool within the bend of the tube? I seem to recall that my R2 has such a beast in there. What is the purpose of the course steel wool?

Inquiring minds would like to know.

There was no woven filter or 'Rats Nest' used in the 'R' engine oil pan side breather pipes.....Those filters were used in the 'Road Draft Tubes' on early, non 'R', Studebaker V-8's.

As a clogged 'Rats Nest' can restrict crankcase ventilation....many mechanics toss them!

There should be a slotted baffle just above the bend of the emission tube and nothing else.

There should be a "Z" shaped baffle at the bend, just to keep the oil from squirting out the top.

Is the gasket where the pipe attaches to the pan available or do you make your own?

S.I. lists that gasket in their catalog.

Thanks, I thought I looked but maybe not or I missed it.

Hopefully, pictures are worth a thousand words..

In making my clone tube, I had this cut..

PM me with your email and I'll send a drawing of it you can print on sticky paper and cut it out of 22 ga metal..

Which bends like this. And from my video snake, it is darn close to what it really is!

I then shove it down the pipe to the bend..

The one on the left is the clone..

I also made a swedging tool for the dipstick tube so it slides in like OEM..
