    Trunk rubber

    I'm about to install some new trunk channel rubber to hopefully stop a leak. Any pointers on doing so? Or is it just basically throw on some 3M adhesive and you're good to go.

    Get the old stuff all cleaned out and attend to any rusty spots with some sort of rust treatment or something to at least inhibit the rust some. Then apply thin coats of the stuff to the channel bottom and to the bottom edge of the WS and install carefully. Cut and mitre the stuff BEFORE you install it and be careful not to stretch it as you do so.

    I guess I should close the trunk afterwards to keep everything pressed down into place? Then check it with a hose and water after maybe 24hrs to be safe.

    As Biggs said, dry fit, cut and miter before applying any adhesive. If you follow the adhesive directions, once it's in place it's not going to move so be careful the first time.

    Also wipe down the rubber with lacquer thinner and let dry before doing anything else to remove any mold release or talc that may be on it. I asked about this earlier and someone recommended using a cyanoacrylate adhesive made by Loctite for the miter joints, but I was unable to locate any and just used the yellow 3M stuff.

    Well, it's in there. I'll give it a good rinse tomorrow to see if I still have the leak. That 3M stuff sure is messy. Sorry Nate, I was already working on it when you posted about the lacquer thinner. If this doesn't work or if I have to redo any parts of it, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the suggestions.

    Get some 3m adhessive remover. It will take off any excess glue and will NOT hurt the paint. Also good to clean your hands. Good Luck.

    Be real careful with the lacquer thinner. It will remove paint off.

    That's why you use it to wipe the rubber, not the car, before installing, and let it evaporate before glueing.
