64' 289. I suspect that my distributor is installed 180 degrees off. Is the vacuum advance supposed pointing toward the drivers side or the passenger side? If the passenger side then mine is off. Also, can't seem to find a diagram for firing order for the distributor - where is #1 on the distributor supposed to be? Need info ASAP.

I'm sure others will correct this if I'm wrong. My '53 (6 volt Delco) distributor has the vacuum advance pointing due east (with the car pointing north) The No. 1 spark plug wire is pointing north, it is the forward most wire.

My finger in on the number 1 cylinder wire on my 64 289 engine. The vacuum advance is pointing towards the passenger side.

The location of the vacuum advance tells you little about the timing, it the position if the rotor relative to number one. If it's a 180 out of time, it'll point to number one on the exhaust stroke, not compression.

Leonard, your number one is in the wrong place, but it makes little difference as long as it's timed right.

Two or three south of you finger. It really does not matter which is number one on the distributor. Here is what I did two weeks ago after my distributer caved. You should remove the #1 cylinder spark plug (Drivers side closest to the rad - 1,3,5,7) stick your finger over the spark plug hole and find the compression stroke. Install the distributor and where ever the rotor is pointing is your #1 wire, counter clock wise to the firing order from there. My #1 wire was two south of your finger.

Thanks. It is running real good, but I will change the wires when I get a chance. The guy who put the wiring harness in for me just drove it and told me it was scary!

I've advised Leonard not to change the wires, not to try to locate No. 1 TDC and put the rotor in the correct location. This will mess up the oil pump drive, the distributor won't 'seat' until the oil pump is properly lined up and things will go down-hill from there.

Is it counter clock wise. Does the rotor turn counter clockwise? I'm not home and can't consult my books, counter clock wise roataion seems wrong, I'm not sure on this 289 engine.

I like to "make things right," just put the dist in so that rotor points to no. 1 and body is correctly located, if it doesn't line up, just keep light pressure on the dist. body and bump the engine over with a remote starter switch, it will drop right in within half a revolution.
