  • Seat Belts For Avanti

I will be driving my 1964 Avanti R-1 to South Bend. It does not have seat belts. Where can I source black original seat belts that must have been an option in 1964. My Avanti is the one with 4500 original mileage and is in totaly original unmolested condition.

Micheal, let me preface my comments first by saying that seat belts are always an excellent idea for safety's sake. I'm a firm believer in them when ever possible.

As for driving the car to South Bend without them, you can legally do this as seat belts were not a federal requirement until January 1, 1965. All cars built before this date are exempt. Even cars built before this date that were built with seat belts are exempt. Just a FYI.

Again, having said all this, belts are always a good idea. Standard 2-point belts will only keep you from being thrown from the car. They will not keep you from kissing the steering wheel or windshield like a 3-point harness will. As far as I know, all judging organizations are not allowed to deduct for seat belts or a fire extinguisher.

My NYC ordered '63 came with maroon belts. (original option according to a brochure I have a scanned copy around here somewhere)

I would NOT drive any car without a seat belt!!!
Looking at the Studebaker International catalog and the Web page, at the resolution available, they look like exact duplicates.

I have another seat belt question, which I will put up soon.[8D]

All '63 and '64 Studebaker cars I have ever seen here on the West Coast were ordered with optional front seat belts. (Governm't.?) Mandatory option, I believe.

Agreed...mine has them (front only) listed on the build sheet.

They are close, but not exact. the factory belts had a recessed area for the decal, the repro's do not.

For those who need belts and have your original buckles, a company called Ssssnake Oyl Products can replace the webbing and rebuild your original buckles. Here's their website...

Just a note, these guys are not cheap. But they will allow you to reused the original buckle if you're looking for that 400 pt judging.

                          They have good products.
I use their web tie-down straps for my trailer and have some of their seat belts (hidden) in the Bearcat.

They show plated the buckles and hardware, and rewebbed the belts. They were way better then new, especially the chrome.
