  • Deep-N-Hock Follies - February, 2011

    Melancholy start for February...
The Avanti is on it's way to it's new home.
Ken Kidwell is going to look classy touring in this superb car....
Kind of sad and happy at the same time...

Betcha those rear tires won't last more than a week.

Congrats Ken on a really sweet Avanti.

Our Allis Chalmers B shucked a brake shoe a couple of weeks ago.
So, while doing a parts search, a list of 'stuff' she needed was made up.
Needed brakes, a new temp gauge, a new shift boot, and a new intake/exhaust manifold...
      (The original one was shot)

Found a good used 'original style' one in Iowa.
The original one has a data plate screwed on to the manifold.
The later replacement ones are way different looking.

Ordered all the stuff and it came in a while back...
It was nice out yesterday evening so I tackled the brakes.
Amazingly, all the pins came out easily, as did the shoe sets.
But the housing was packed in crud.
Mud dauber condo's soaked in gear oil, horse hair, and dirt.
Scraped around and blew out as much as I could with a little extended tube blow gun.
The neighbor kid Josh stopped by and I had him hand me the leaf blower.
      Now THAT worked spectacularly!
Crud was shot out of the housing and went at least 10 foot in the air.
Josh back-stepped out of the shop in half a second.
I ended up wearing a lot of it.
Too funny. 73 years of crud....
Got one side done and had the other side partway done up to a point, where I gave up for the night.
It was getting late, and I was tired from bending over trying to fish-wire pull the shoe set around the drum in the housing.
More crud to fish out of there in the morning.
Finished the brakes this morning, and swapped the intake and installed the temp gauge.
Had to drain down the coolant system below the water manifold, as it had to come off to get the broken cheap replacement gauge stem drilled out.
Put it all back together and test ran it while I unbolted the seat pan to weld up a crack in it.
Got halfway done welding and ran out of wire
Ran to Lowe's (closest), and all they had was .023 flux, and .030 flux.
I wanted .035 gas shielded... Ran over to Agri-Supply.
They had the same stuff, and .030 gas shielded wire.
Grrrrrr.... So I bought a little box of .030 tips, grabbed the wire and headed home.
Finished the welding and painted the seat.
Set it in the sun to bake for a while while I cleaned up the shop.
Put the seat back on and went for a test spin.
      Smoooooth running.
      Stops RIGHT NOW!
      Happy boy!
