Timing by vacuum

In the recent Auto Restorer, Milt Webb is tuning up a Rambler and suggests the timing adjustment by gently rotating the dist. in the opposite direction of it's travel...I would twist clockwise in the case of my OHV Stude 6...while it's running with a vacuum gauge plugged in. As you rotate the dist, watch the vacuum climb and when the engine begins to stumble from being too advanced, bring it back to within an inch from the highest reading.

I advance my 259 dist. until I get the highest vacuum reading--it seems to run best there and does not kick back while starting. I plug the vacuum advance and PCV valve before setting it.

It works if you have a "non"-dampened vacuum gauge.
A dampened gauge just isn't sensitive enough to do that correctly.
