  • Engine identification

    I came across a V8 engine with the following number: PCB401. If I am reading the Lark Shop Manual correctly P means 289, C means assembled in Canada, the last three digits are the engine number, but what does the B stand for?
    This engine was put into a Champ truck serial number E7-21105.

    The second letter of the alphabet, 'B', represents the second month, February. The numeral '4' represents the year 1964, and '01' is the day of the month. With this new engine serial code started in 1963 for 1964 model year production there could have been only a few or many engine blocks stamped that day and all would have the same number.

        The Engine is likely from a Imported, Late Canadian built '64 CAR. It is not a Truck Engine.

          Where would the S/N be stamped on a 61 Hawk 289 engine?

            Same place. It would be "P' signifying a 289. A 259 would be a "V" prefix. There would be probably 5 numbers following the prefix

                This 4 Screw, Water Manifold and Thermostat Housing are both Pre-1961, not a match for the Full Flow Canadian '64 Hawk Engine, but maybe the Radiator, depending on if the Champ is an 5E, 6E, 7E or 8E Year Model.

                The E7 is a 1/2 Ton V8 Champ Truck, but NOT indicating the YEAR!

                  The engine number is stamped on the block. The engine number is not the same number as the serial number (S/N), as it is with some makes of car.

                      The Production Order from the Studebaker National Museum will give the ORIGINAL Engine Serial Number, but first they have to know the CAR Serial number from the I.D. plate on the Door Post or the rearmost Frame Crossmember lower flange.
