  • “Dash”— our ‘59 Hawk project

I thought maybe it was time to show-n-tell about our ‘59 Silver Hawk Kathy and I are building. This car we bought from a nice fellow name Al Duble in Arizona. It had been involved in an accident that fortunately didn’t hurt him, but didn’t do the car any good Click image for larger version

ID:	1759580Here’s a poor shot of it on our way back from Arizona to Seattle, where I took 2of my grandsons on a road trip to get it. The car is a typical totally rust-free Arizona car, just amazing. A complete bolt-on nose was what was required to fix it... aft of the engine the car was excellent. It’s a 259 stick with O.D. And... air conditioning.
After fitting the nose parts I found here in Seattle,Click image for larger version

ID:	1759588I chose a new color— 1955 Mercedes Benz Graphite Grey. I am sort of tired of seeing white Hawks— seems like Studebaker must have gotten a deal on white paint, because from ‘59-‘63 there just seems to be PILES of white ones— and I thought with the red and black interior this non-metallic color would really “pop”.Click image for larger version

I wish I knew why my pictures are so small— what am I doing differently than some of you?

I love the color. Good work on getting it back together. Too many never get back on the road once they've been crunched.
I can't wait to see it finished. What color, if any, accents? i.e. fins, top, trunk?

So are you calling that dark Grey? There is some Green Grass reflection on it, making it almost look like a touch of Green.

Looks like enough Clearcoat to last about a Hundred Years.

Very sharp looking car. I'm partial to gray Hawks anyway.

I'm glad you saved it. I want to see it with the interior and trim in place.
            Flipped your picture.

I have purchased 2 Studebakers that once belonged to Al Duble. He was still living near me here in Oregon when I purchased a 1950 Commander 4-door sedan from him. Great car! I later sold it to buy my '55 President State Sedan which was owned by Al years ago. He sold it to a club member from whom I purchased it.
I don't remember the Hawk you bought from him. I wonder if he acquired that after he moved to Arizona. It sure looks like you are doing a bang up job on it (pun intended). It will be very gratifying to get this car back on the road.
              Good job.

I'm going to leave the fins Grey, but I'm collecting opinions about the side grille "Nostrils"... They could be Silver, Matte Black, Red, or maybe this new Grey... What do y'all think?

Nice job getting her back on the road. The color choice is great AND different from as you stated, all the other white ones out there. Post completion pics ASAP, we're waiting with bated breath!.

I think Metallic Silver would look Great in the Side Grille openings, it will blend nicely with it's cousin the Grey Body.

I also think the Wheel Color should match the side grilles, that would be just enough Contrast and not TOO much, like the Red Wheels are.

I never like to see 2 Metallic's together, two Metallic Colors rarely look good together, since the Grey is a Solid Color, a little bit of Metallic Silver will spruce up that bland looking Dark Grey.

A window into our thinking-- The red wheels are freshly powder-coated in the red we chose specifically to provide stark contrast to the dark grey, and as a vehicle to tie in the red and black interior to the exterior. So they're going to stay. Kathy likes the silver side grille idea-- I'm still collecting opinions.

I bought the green 51 Landcruiser from Al. Saw it peeking out of the garage when he advertised the damaged Hawk, you beat me to the Hawk Kenny.

Al WAS holding the Landcruiser for you but when you didn’t exercise your option, it became available. I remember talking to you then as you were trying to figure out how to get both cars. You’re doing well with the Hawk. I’m in the process of getting the Landcruiser back to stock.......correct engine bay colors and returning to 6V. I’m also installing a complete new wiring harness. I plan on doing a Turner disc brake upgrade also.

I'd go with the side grill surounds chrome, and the fin inset to match the wheels.
