Off to The 2018 Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race

'Join us if you can: Stanton MI at The Mid-Michigan Motorplex Friday, September 14 (Practice and Qualifications) and Saturday, September 15 (Racing and Shootouts).

Both The Plain Brown Wrapper and The Stude Tomato will be there to compete...as will Chuck Kern's R2 Avanti, Joe Flannigan's 1963 R2 Lark Custom, Neil and Robin Loughlin's 1964 225 HP / 4-Speed Daytona hardtop...and who knows how many others.

Woo-Hoo; our 21st consecutive year! BP

We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

I really enjoy watching the youtube videos of the Studes vs the rest of the world... Is there going to be another like the 2014 PSMCDR coverage? Great stuff!

Unless, of course, there is some sort of copyright infringement, yadda, yadda...oh, well.

I always look forward to your reports on this event.

I wonder how a 56J would perform there, often said to be the fastest straight line car you could buy in 56.

OH BOY ! I always enjoy the pics and coverage from you, Bob. I have already threatened David with the 55 coupe that if he runs in the 12's, I'm gona' file a protest, ha ! My 55 wouldn't hit 30 mph in 12 seconds, but we love it anyway ! You guys have fun, sure would like to be right in the middle of it, but it's a long swim.... Say, did y'all ever consider moving it to Hilo, Hawaii one year ? I could make that one..... We need to all get together and pay travel expences for Randy Bohannan to bring his 56 GH with two fours and ????? else over there. It would have to be awesome !

Yes, we'd all love to know how quick and fast Randy's Jet Streak kit '56J would be. Unfortunately, it's not eligible for PSMCDR, as Studebaker never offered that as a factory build.

That he did. First practice run, first shift, first day! What a way to start the event, but at least it allowed "us" and Ted to concentrate on The Plain Brown Wrapper , since The Tomato was winched back up on Ted's truck for the duration.

(The first time he grabbed second gear, he heard a crunch and it made unhappy noises. It limped down the rest of the track in third and got back to the pits. Once there, it would pull in all gears except second. He was afraid of doing further damage, so that was it for The Tomato for this year.)

Busy getting caught up here, but I'll try to post some photos and a brief report of The 2018 Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race on Sonny's Racing Studebakers forum Tuesday, with a link to it here. BP

I took some video of Robin running our '64 Daytona hardtop. Her 3 shootout runs are on Youtube. The links are below. The first is a view from the stands. The 2nd is in-car. The third is a series of launches showing her 4 best reaction times of the weekend. I'll add more once I get the videos trimmed.

    The car is a stock 289 V8 with 4bbl carb. 225hp, not an R1. Trans is a T10 4 speed.

Robin nailed some nice reaction times on the trial runs. Really good. Tires are not holding (breaking loose) on the 1st gear pull judging from the the tach light. Thanks for sharing.

Why are they allowing line locks on a lot of these cars? Nothing pure stock about a line lock.

What a fantastic time! This was my first opportunity to experience the Pure Stocks. The Stude fraternity ( and sorority in some cases ) was incredible. A great bunch of selfless and caring folks. Joe Flannery and I had a few issues with his R-2 Lark but overcame most as people helped with parts and food . I am a witness to Ted using the Stude Tomato as a parts car for Joe to make his final runs. That's for another story. What a guy! We made it back to PA/NJ and I'm sure Joe will have something more for us to read about in TW later. Thanks to all the dedicated racers and their families for a great time.
    Rob in PA.
