    53 coupe air conditioning

I plan to install air conditioning on my 53 Commander coupe, and concerned about hood clearance. I plan to use factory compressor brackets from a later Hawk. Also use a sanden 508 compressor using an adapter to the factory bracket. I am using a Avanti engine mounts to provide more clearance. Will my efforts be in vain, or will I have hood clearance?

If your compressor has rear line ports probably ok. side inlet exit can cause problems. proceed with caution. Luck Doofus

I installed A/C on my '53 C/K and could not use it much in hot weather as there was insufficient air intake to keep the radiator from boiling. I used an auxiliary fan and still had problems. I wish you good fortune. Chet445

Will your car need to be converted to 12v to make the system work?

Thanks for your reply. The overheat problem you have is discouraging! I will be using a studebaker HD three core radiator, and auxiliary fan. I can only hope for the best. What bracket did you use?

I used the top mount for the compressor don't do it. put it on the side where the generator is then put your generator on the driver side. that way you should be able to use the fan shroud. I had to modify the ---- out of my shroud so that's my 2 cents. The other thing i would suggest is use a unit that give you air, heat and defroster it will tuck up under the dash more. As far as over heating I'm still not sure I have that under control , 3 core aluminum radiator , 18 inch flex fan manual style , camaro air dam. Also make sure your vacuum advance is working if not you could heat up at highway speeds. Oh my car is a 55 coupe with a 53 face lift 289 3sp w/od.

Thank you for your reply. Installing the generator on the left side creates another problems as I have Hawk power steering installed. I know some people install the generator in the "vee" and that is still a possibility.

Thanks for the picture. It is a possibility, but my Eaton P/steering pump would be a problem for me I'm sure.

here is what I did on the Speedster. Used a Lincoln/Tarus 2 speed fan which includes the shroud. It requires an alternator as it takes about 50 amps when kicking on IIRC> as well as a relay setup. I built the alternator bracket.
