  • Electrical: Rewiring 2R5 - Looking for someone to help with it

    .
    Guys,

I am in Ohio near Cincinnati and I need help rewiring my 1951 2R5 pickup. It has the original cloth-wrapped wires and it needs to be completely rewired (see attached photo.)

I am not a mechanic. Please don't grind me by saying, "Well, you should have never bought an old truck then." I have a hip replacement, I had my right shoulder completely reconstructed just a few months ago, and I had stage four prostate cancer where there was a lot of collateral damage. Rewiring my truck is simply beyond my physical capability and I'm looking for someone to do it for me while I offer a lending hand.

Can you suggest someone who knows what they're doing to help me get my truck rewired?

    Thanks for your replies-
    Mark in Ohio

Fortunately those trucks are some of the easiest to wire, as virtually all the connections to the dash panel are exposed under the hood. This is not going to require a Studebaker specialist. Complete new properly color coded harnesses specifically for your 2R5 are available and one of those, along with the available schematic, should make it a trap shoot for even a novice mechanic.
Lacquered/braided wire harness are available, as are simple plastic coated. Just be sure you get the heavier gauge wires required for a 6-volt system.
And I'm sure members of your local SDC chapter can help, or at least provide a recommendation in your area.

I think it should be a good start. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Do you have the Shop manual for the truck? Order one, that should give you the wiring diagram.
After that, any electrician or mechanic worth his salt should be able to do it.

I've learned that if you don't remove any old wiring until the new is laid out in place, then just swap them over one at a time carefully, it will work just fine.
(The shop manual tells you which wire(color/stripe) goes where)

Note: you may have one wire too many, or one wire short. Depends on a few things, like options added, subtracted, etc.

Besides, that may only be the front wiring harness, you still need a rear at some point.

I wish I lived closer. I would be glad to help. You may have a club member in your area so inclined. My 52 2R is going to get rewired also.
