    Asking all new SDC members to respond

    On January 12, 2018 there is a post about adding new members to the Studebaker Drivers Club. Several suggestions have been offered. I am posting this request as an addendum to that post.

    I would like simple feedback from new members that have joined the Studebaker Drivers Club. If you have joined in the past year or two, please let me know why you did join. It could be as simple as I bought a car, family member joined and I did, interested in history or if you are a member that had previously in years past joined and joined again why you did.

    If you are a new member and would also like to add a reason why you will renew your membership, that would be great! If you are a new member and have suggestions for the good of SDC, that would be good feedback as well.

    If you have joined a local chapter in the Pacific Southwest Zone give feedback on that as well. If you do have issues on anything, please send me a PM so I can note your concern and respond privately and relay your information to the chapter(s).

    I'm coming up on my 3rd year of membership. I joined because a couple years prior to that I had seen and talked to folks from the Karel Staple chapter of the SDC here in Sacramento. They had a display at the local Autorama in 2013, and I registered for the forum shortly after. I knew that at some point I wanted an old station wagon, and a Studebaker was always in the running, but I hadn't landed on the marque specifically. Talking to them about prices and specifications and parts availability made my mind up.

    So three years ago I was in a better position to actively look for a Studebaker wagon, but I wanted to educate myself about the nuances of all things Studebaker and figured the club would be the best avenue for that. I attended the car show portion of the zone meet that was in my backyard, took a lot of photos and it deepened my interest in Studebakers in general. As much as I knew that I'd be looking for a Lark VIII wagon, I became a fan of nearly all the other models and still dream of a late 50's Hawk someday.

    I continue to renew largely because of Turning Wheels. I especially love the Fred Fox articles on specific models and years, and the Co-Operator column serves as a good reference to learn about mechanical pitfalls before they happen to me, and to learn what the solution is. I guess that's one of the beauties of having a company that kept the mechanical specification the same over many years - a lot of the issues from a different model that might be 10 years older than mine still applies directly.

    I have not been an active club member with either the local chapter (which I did also join), or attending the zone meets subsequent to the one I did go to before I became an owner although I have intentions to change that somewhat in the future. I just have limited free time and multiple obligations and activities - I wish I had more time to spend with my actual Studebaker either in my garage or out on the road, let alone being involved in Studebaker club activities. But I do realize that members need to support the club if it is going to survive into the future.

    Just so everyone knows, Bob Miles will be the new Zone Coordinator for the Pacific Southwest Zone effective April 15th. I am delighted to see he has already dug in his heels in an effort to improve membership in SDC. Be sure to get all your Regional Managers on board to assist you Bob,

    This kind of effort would be nice from all Zone Coordinators and even more so by Board members. Unfortunately that has not been the case. Bob Miles should be applauded and copied by all ZC's and Board members across the country.

    I bought a car almost a year ago, that is why I joined. Id like to see a Los Angeles chapter, as the closest to me is Northridge, and I havent been able to make it to any meetings.

    That IS the Los Angeles Chapter, I guess their Membership has drifted North into the Valley so most meetings are "over the Hill".

    OH GREAT, it's been Hacked by Koreans, Chinese or?

    They had that "Drift" happen also, and their Meetings MAY sometimes be closer or as far as the L.A. meetings, to you now.

    Rich- the way I read it was that if you had issues with the club to PM him.

    To clarify, open post for the reason for joining is what I solicit. If there is an "issue" I would rather receive a PM and only have positive responses posted and if there is an issue send a PM. I have received a nice PM from a member for there reason for joining. I have not received any as of now if there is an issue. I want this to stay positive: we can learn and grow with good feedback.

    When there are more responses then it will be easy to see why people are joining our great club. Our open forum does not have any restrictions, but in the spirit of the post, I hope new members will respond and others that are not may post for their reason. Keep in mind, our club has evolved over the years and as valid as you had for joining may not be as applicable today. If anyone feels they need to post for reasons other than the spirit of the post, PM me.

    I joined a little less than a year ago. I've had my eye on a Studebaker truck project for quite a while. I found my 55 E-5 in a field outside Portland, and grabbed it before going to the crusher. I call it my pasture rescue. I always liked the lines of the Stude trucks as opposed to the "blocky" look of the trucks of that era. After that, I started reading everything I could which led me to this site and, specifically, the tech forum. Great site with very friendly people willing to share their knowledge and experience.

    edit: I should mention that I have a ,membership, receive TW, and intend to renew.

    The ZONE TALK part of the FORUM works great to kinda keep discussions in your Zone... but in this case, we can all learn from the answers.

    Hey! Jake Kaywell commenting to report that while I still have not received any issues of Turning Wheels (I did sign up in November) I will still renew my membership because this forum and my GT Hawk by the name of Daisy-Mae have both been great!! One suggestion I would like to make to SDC is to develop the photo album more. I was disappointed by the relatively few pictures that were in there.
    Jake Kaywell: Shoo-wops and doo-wops galore to the background of some fine Studes. I'm eager and ready to go!

    Not to beat a dead horse, but to clarify my response, you had previously said that you though Bob was ONLY looking for private messages as replies, not open posts. To which I replied that it seemed like he was looking for PMs only regarding issues. No matter, Bob clarified his desires.

    If you joined SDC in November, it seems that you should have received one or possibly two issues of Turning Wheels by now. Please check with Cornerstone Registration (during normal business hours) - 763-420-7829 to verify your membership and mailing address.

    Update: Thanks to Jake and Dean so far for your thread response. I have also receive several positive PM responses from new members. Not that this is scientific by any means, it is a good indicator of why people are joining. Keep 'em coming. This hopefully be useful to keep our club active and vibrant in the coming years.

    I will update later on the reasons people are joining.

    I joined in 2014, even though I've had Studebakers since the 60's. The main reasons for joining was to find out about events, trips, and leads for parts.

    Joined a couple of years ago, hoping to find a "bullet-nose" convertible -- and figured that TURNING WHEELS would be good place to look...and look....and look. I did finally find a Studebaker (my first old car purchase, discovered in Hemmings) and have spent the past year restoring this 1951 Champion Regal Convertible to become a daily driver. The advice on these forum pages has been positive, and I am indebted to Bob Palma and others for personally answering emails or direct messages. SDC members have helped steer me to everything from radio restoration to how to best handle "frozen" screw lifts on a 67 year old car (Palma's answer: have new hydraulics installed. A masterful answer, because now the roof lifts effortlessly.) I am grateful that for this forum and the amazing monthly magazine. And, for what it's worth, I like the new magazine format. Easier to read.

    I re-joined in 2014 after about an 8 year hiatus. I re-joined because we had finally dragged out my 59 Lark and revived it, to get ready to take it to the St. Louis Int'l meet in 2015 and then the Hot Rod Power Tour the next year (2016 and 2017).

    The previous time I was in membership from about 1997 through 2006. I was an active member in a local club and was the secretary for a few years. I left due to a disagreement on how to attract new members to the club (I was the youngest at age 35.) Since then, most of the local chapter I had been a member, have passed away and there is very little local activity from that chapter. I MAY join another chapter nearby, but I'm not sure at this time.

    I joined the first time because I had owned my Stude since 1981 and encountered a local member that was VERY active with his cars. We were just starting our family, but didn't have our car out and running yet.

    I disagree with not posting negative comments because that's a bit like hiding the real reasons why people do or do not join. You may see why they join, but not why they don't stay.

    I hope this gains positive results!

    Thanks for your comments! I am hopeful this will gain positive results. I have received many positive responses on my PM and one negative response that I will be passing on to the board.

    The main reason I asked to have negative responses sent to me by PM was not to hide reasons but to not start a grass fire and have new people discourage in responding.

    My hope is after more feedback, I will start a new thread categorizing the positive results, in hopes to grow our membership. As an addendum, if anyone that has joined and do like to continue membership, please include those comments as well.

    This is not scientific by any means. Just friendly feedback but I will make mention later of all the PM's I may get both good and bad.

    I joined two years ago when I bought a 49 2R17A....I have always wanted an avanti or hawk......a few years prior to my purchace, I went to the Studebaker Museum to research a car I had found for sale, but never saw one in good condition (56 President two door) I went to look at the scotsman and the green president.....I was blown away at the museum, the "forgotten" cars that I have always been drawn to....

    I had always been a mopar guy, still am, but I always had trucks and C-Bodys.....and No Bodys Like C Bodies....Well, we are far and few between....thank god for facebook...I find there are more of us around...

    but back to Studebakers....the people I have met, and have helped with advise, parts, and such have proven to be THE NICEST PEOPLE IN THE AUTO ENTHUSIAST WORLD.....Mopar guys are cool only to the same cars as they like...turned up noses at anything else....help you out if they don't want it, or think you can out run their car.......unlike here, where if you want a copy of the Stude-Tomato, or the Whistler.....just ask....supercharge a Wagon.....why not.....fix a FOUR DOOR (horrors) ABSOLUTELY....everyone has a favorite, mine is my number one....yours is appreciated too....Only little snobbery I have noticed is the Avanti vs the Avanti II guys......seems the II's are second rate to some....(not me)......

    so, I will continue the membership, enjoy making new friends who I don't have to compete with, but folks I can enjoy cars with.

    The nicest cars come from South Bend.....and the drivers of such, ain't bad either.

    Kevin,

    Thank you for your input. This says volumes about the majority of our club. Sure there might be a few that behave like your experience with the Mopar group as well as the bow ties and the blue oval yet most people when they gather together, like to drive and eat at an outing. When I joined our chapter, someone suggested that SDC stood for Studebaker Diners Club.

    Keep sending responses gang. We need it to assure our Studebaker Drivers Club maintains membership and great experiences.

    I guess I didn't state the primary reason for my re-joining: Parts and contacts.

    I needed parts for my car and I needed to get back in touch with some of the locals and that was the best way to do it.

    I agree that the Studebaker guys are very helpful with other Stude guys because they all know we are all "just a little different" anyway, just because we don't have a bowtie, blue oval, or a set of ram's horns.

    But we ALL have the lazy "S".

    Thanks for keeping things alive and keeping the FORUM alive. This is the ONLY way any new members will find us. Nobody under 40 reads a newspaper anymore.

    I joined about 6 or 7 months ago. The main reason was, I purchased a 1952 Commander that is in reasonable condition and hoped I would find info here to keep it running and fix it up some. I'm looking to make this, if not my daily driver, at least able to drive it on more than just weekends and holidays.

    I joined in fall 2017. I'm a Studebaker fan and driver(on and off) since about 1971. Members of my extended family had Studes, mostly Hawk's and I loved the look of them since I was a kid in the 60's. My great uncle Nelson had a 60 Lark, uncle Gerry a late 50's Hawk, uncle Wayne a 63 GT Hawk that I remember. My grandfather always seemed to have a Stude at his mechanic shop. I spent a lot of my growing up in Woodstock Ontario not far from Hamilton and we watched CHCH TV from Hamilton. That channel featured Studebaker news often enough to remember as well as the closing of the Studebaker plant.
    I learned to drive standard shift on a 64 Lark before I got my license. A few years back I bought an Avanti out of a run down shed within a mile or so of the old Studebaker plant in Hamilton. That fufilled a dream I 've had since 1963. Unfortunately the car was in far worse condition that I was told and I had to sell it after 2 years of a slow,slow rehab that stalled out.
    So last year I was able to fufill another Stude dream and bought my current GT Hawk, and now I'm trying to get my hands on a 66 Commander.
    Joining seemed the right thing to do, and I'm glad I did! Eventhough I'm not a club type person, Turning Wheels is a very well done and enjoyable read. The rarity of Studebakers on the road is another reason as well. I like the underdog, and Studebaker has always been that, compared to the Big 3. Of all the different cars that I've had, mostly Big 3 models, Studes have special spot to me and this is a good place to learn more and share the common experience.

    I bought a 53 Starlight Coupe in April of 2017, the young guy (40 something?) I bought it from had several sitting around and I think he said something at SDC but after you buy a rusty hulk of a car you have to figure out what resources are available to you. I Googled and SDC came up and I found the forum, it alone is worth the cost of membership, I need to join the local club also, just haven't. Having had no knowledge of Studebaker's other than wanting either a 53/54 Coupe I feel fortunate that there is such a good following (and good parts availability for many items). I sorta miss the old style of Turning Wheels (uniqueness) but the new version is certainly of higher quality and if it is lower in cost than it was a great business decision.

    I guess this is my second year in SDC. I bought a 50 back then and, in my view, if you are interested in a particular type of vehicle the best thing you can do is join the club. Helps them, helps you. And a monthly issue of TW is worth the price of admission alone. Lot's of quick help here on the forum too.

    I bought my 1964 Studebaker in August of 2017.
    Responded to an ad for a Studebaker Oil Can in December 2017, turned out to be local members to me of the drivers club.
    I had already heard of the club online but George talked the club up. I'm very glad he did.
    Towards the end of January this year I joined the club. I received my first issue of turning wheels today.
    Very impressed with the magazine.
    Not quite two months of membership and I can see that the membership fee was more than worth it.

    I joined after buying a pair of Studebakers, a 63 Lark and a 64 Commander, both spent at least a decade in a field with the commander suffering the worst. The forum has been a great resource for learning as I slowly bring the Lark back to life. I will renew my membership after I get the Lark roadworthy, I would like to attend an event in it.

    Hi Bob, Jim here, i"ve always liked studebakers. When i was in high school in the 60"s my friend and neighbors mother had a lark she drove to work and i thought it was kinda neat and different. I also had an uncle from indiana that was a lark owner. So i remembered studeys from my youth. I had"nt seen any studeys around my part of the country for years. I know people said most of them rusted out fast up north hear. It wasn"t until 2015 when i started to get used to the computer and someone said i should check out craigslist for things to buy and sell and i was checking out cars for sale and i came across the 64 commander. I was"nt really looking for one but i could"nt resist and called the guy an ended up buying it. I liked the commander but last year i saw an ad for the Cruiser on Craigslist. From what i had read on forum the v8 was a much better motor. So i bought the 62 Cruiser last august and drove it home 300 miles. So i figured i"m probably going to stay a studey driver so might as well join the club.

    How did I miss this before? I better get me some new glasses.

    I joined about 1 1/2 years ago, right after buying Kelly Marion's 60 Lark. I knew diddly about Studebaker's and figured this would be a good place to learn (it has).

    Just a bump on this thread. I need 5 more responses by PM or on the forum then I will publish my results of replies to the forum and emails I have sent out to new members on the zone reports I just started receiving. I also have two negative responses that I will publish as well. No names will be published just the raw data. Hopefully this will help to know what we need to encourage new membership.
