  • Body / Glass: 87-89 Avanti Dash removal

Someone in the Avanti thread about heater motors stated they wanted the dash removal procedures. I thought it best to start a separate thread.
According to a manual i have, and verbatum, here it is:
    Right side.
    1. Remove carpeted A/C cover on right side under dash
    2. Remove (2) 5/16 nut securing ECM, and remove ECM
    3. Remove (2) 7/16 nuts securing dash to upper dash support (right side up under dash)
    4. Remove 7/16 bolt securing right lower corner of dash to Z-bar.

    Left Side
    1. Remove 9/16 nuts attaching steering column
    2. Remove 7/16 bolt under hood pull
    3. Unplug headlight switch
    4. Cut wire ties (2) holding gauge harness to z-bar
    5. Unscrew speedometer cable
    6. Unscrew gauge harness bulk connector
    7. Remove (2) 7/16 nuts securing dash to dash support
    8. Remove (1) 3/8 nut securing brace on left side of stereo behind dash
    9. Remove vacuum hose on vacuum gauge.

Place fingers in defroster duct area and pull up on dash t release stude securing dash to dash support (upper)

After releasing all (4) studs pull dash forward far enough to gain access to the remaining connectors.

    1. Disconnect radio connectors
    2. Disconnect heater control wiring, and vacuum harness
    3. Disconnect heater control cable
    4. Disconnect windshield wiper controls, and ground connector (probably meaning wiring)
    5. Disconnect heater ducts
    6. Disconnect rear defrost, fog lamp, and other switches if applicable.
    Remove dash.
    Installation is reverse of removal.

So there you have it. It sounds to me exactly like the earlier dash removal procedures for Studebaker Avantis, except for a few added switches, and wiring.
I hope this helps. If not you can always call me, and I'll always be glad to answer questions.

Terminology may be a little confusing. Z-bar is the same as the bottom metal brace under the dash that goes from door jamb to door jamb. The upper dash support is the metal windshield frame the lower part at the inside base of the windshield.....also going from A pillar to A pillar.

Brad did a nice job of describing the removal. I put a modified 89 dash in my 74 so I'll assume that both years are similar behind the dash. Here are a couple of shots with my dash out. Hoping to give you a perspective of what you may find back there.

This first one shows the location of three of the bolts holding the dash panel to the body. There are two holes (one per defroster), just left of each defroster outlet where you see a black mark on the body. The third hole is evident in the picture.

The last mounting hole is shown in this shot and both will let you see the Z-bar as Brad indicated.

Hope this helps some as my dash is in so these are the best shots I've got.
