Wanted to Buy: Rear differential for my Hawk

The rear diff in my Hawk is bad and I am in search for a replacement. I am looking for something with 3:73 gears (twin traction is a plus) but will consider others. If there is anyone in the MN area who has what Im looking for and looking to sell, please let me know.

    Thanks

I have a 1962 V8 powered Lark sedan parts car. I don't know if it is Twin Traction and I don't know the ratio, but I will look for an ID tag. It may be a few days before I get to it, but I will let you know what I find.

    In the middle of MinneSTUDEa.

Unfortunately most Larks had the Standard 259 Engine, which had a Dana Model 27, not a good replacement for a Hawk with a 289 that used the stronger Model 44.

The 3.73 Ratio would normally be only in an Overdrive Car.

You might look up a 4wd shop in your area.
The Dana 44 differential was used in many vehicles (and 4wd light trucks) through the years.
They might help you save what you have, or upgrade it using Dana 44 parts...

I have never seen a, "bad" 44 rear end in a Stude, except one that was ran dry of oil for an extended period. What is wrong with yours?

The twin traction unit ground some gears. Everything else looks ok. Attached is a picture.. the metallic chunks on the bottom is from the spider gears.

I have what I think is a Dana 44 (not TT) in Hopkins, MN. You are welcome to come over and have a look at it.

No, but it came out of a 53 Commander w/o OD so it is most likely 3.54 or 3.73.

If it was original in a '53 it would be a 4.54 Ratio.

I have one from my 55 Speedster. 3.54 ratio. I drive to Sioux Falls to work on a project every week so can bring it there. I removed it because the wheels I put on the car required a narrower rear end. It is not TT. Cleaned and painted. No brake parts included and not the original lug bolts so might want to use original axles or not.. $75 I can send pictures if needed.
I will be going back Sunday - you can call 605-280-2582 if interested.

I fount that I have a 44 differential with a 3:31 ratio in my shed (from a 1963 Wagonaire if I recall correctly). You would need to remove the gearing and install in your housing as this housing has the axle tube cut off one side (only one axle shaft remains). I don't know if it is TT or not, I could remove the cover to see if you are interested. I would take $50 for it.
As for the rear end in the '62 Lark, I have not gone underneath the car yet to look. As Rich stated, it may only be a Dana 27.

Well I was kind of hoping to find something I could just put into the car without having to touch the gears or axles. I know next to nothing about rear differentials, but I suppose its never to late to learn. Seeing how the ring and pinion in my diff are not damaged, maybe I should be looking for a new twin traction unit?

I would be interested in it if its TT. I may be able to use the TT unit in my dana 44.

That's what mine is type 45. Do you have anything with 3:73 gears?

I just confirmed that it is a Twin Traction differential (45C) with a 3:31 ratio.

If the ring and pinion are good, just rebuild yours. A master bearing kit is about $130 and an internal TT (Dana powr lok) kit is about $200. The original shim packs will get you very close to the correct settings as a starting point. Setting up the rear is described well in the shop manual as well as in an older Ford pickup service manual. Either find a place to do it in Minnesota or send it to me this winter via Spee Dee delivery and I can rebuild it for you. jimpepper60@gmail.com

Milaca, if you still have that when the South Bend meet comes up, I'm interested in it Would prefer a later flanged axel, but a TT still makes a big difference in a C/K.
