I was in Orlando for a business meeting in February and must have seen a half dozen of these Amscot buildings on the way downtown from the airport. It turns out they are "financial services" company that seems to specialize in check cashing and money wiring. Must be a lot of folks running around that can't open an account at a bank.
You would be correct about the services, but their big claim to fame is free money orders. When I first moved down here, that was what I used them for. Until I had a place to stay, it was the best way to handle stuff because a lot of places hate to see out-of-state checks.

They also do tax preperation, sell stamps, small loans as well as the already mentioned check cashing and wire transfers. I actually buy my stamps there because there is almost no lines compared to the post office.

As for the Clearwater Studebaker store, I'm still going to try to stop and get a picture of the lot. Sometimes the footprint of the lot can tell you what kind of business it was. I hope Mike adds more to his earlier post about what kind of place it was.

I don't hold out much hope for the St. Pete store either. The Devil Rays ballpark (Tropicana Field) isn't to far from there so I'm sure a lot has changed.

Here is an old post card of Koplin-Hopping Studebaker in Bloomfield, NJ

What's wrong with this picture? Why are there 1949 Studebakers in the showroom and a 51 Studebaker outside?

Leonard - That is what I was wondering. It could be just the side of the showroom that they used for late model used Studebakers or they had a lot of leftovers in the showroom that they were trying to push out.

    Amazing co-incidence!
Friday I made a copy of a page from the May 1933 Automotive Trade Journal in which an ad listed a few of the "scores of enterprising dealers have been signing up with Studebaker since March 21."

Wilcox and Malm Grand Forks ND

    Graulich Autp sales Evansvile IND

    Robert Y Burns Erie PA

Phil Payne Motor Co Lynchburg PA

    Piedmont Motor Co Winston-Salem NC

    Meridian Garage Yankton SD

    J S Terman Mansfuield OH

John R Mattson Inc Brookline, MA

    Slater Motor Sales Greenwich, CT

ADT Motor Comnpany Kansas City, KS

    Pasquini Motor Co Wilkes-Barre, PA

Arthur R Lindburg Co San Francisco. CA

I wonder how many of these actually gt off the ground.

I bet few, if any, were around at the end, with same name and city.

Lots of other info in those old mags. Some cars (listed) had glass only in the windshield, some throughout, some with none!

Studebaker (W P-A and, ROCKNE, sold 7000+ in Feb & March 1932, under 5K in same months in 1933.
Auburn listed 6 body styles. Caddy V-16 sedan was $16K+ Plymouth had 4 body trim levels in Standard, ix in deLuxe.

Marmon ranged from $4825 to $5480. (I bet they would dicker.)

Essex had valve clearance of only .006"HOT, whereas Ford had .013" cold. I wonder if that gave Ford more sales in itself. <g>

Yes, it was a slow day in the library. I'm getting bored there.

I guess I should mention Frost Motors in Newton, MA. They had one el-stripo Lark "glued to the floor" and MB signs and demos all over the place.

Probably an altered photo..since the color is hand tinted, why not?

My guess is the exterior was taken in 49 and to show off the new bulletnose cars they added one outside...by the old "cut and paste" method. It would have been fairly easy since the detail of the parking lot and street surface is gone.
It would have saved money over having new exterior shot taken by the postcard company.

OHMYGOSH!! that's where I lived up until 1998, and that's the local dealer on Hawthorne Blvd. that I bought out the parts dept. of!!
Also known later as G&M Studebaker.

I have not seen one of their lic. frames in 30 years. And it appears to be attached to a South Bay area of So. Calif. Lark bumper, is that in Chuck Collins' South Gate, CA Stude. yard sale?

That license plate frame is on a Lark that is on a used car lot in Richmond, VA that I posted pictures of. I think the dealer got most of the cars from Southern California.

Haven't seen it mentioned, so: The Studebaker Dealer in my hometown of Rochester, IN was Barkman Motors. The dealership went on to carry Lincoln-Mercury into the late 1970's when it was then purchased and merged with the local Ford Store.

We purchased a used Cub Cadet tractor from the Barkman family when I was in High School (1977-81). We went to their farm to pick it up, and the elder Mr. Barkman took me into his garage to see the last Studebaker he kept. It was a black 60 Lark Sedan with less than 10,000 miles on the odometer. I had recently bought my 55 at the time, so we talked for about a half hour about his dealer days. Since then, both he and his son have passed on. His son was a local elementary school principal, and his daughter in law was my third grade teacher. Mr. Barkman's only remark that I remember is that he dropped Studebaker immediately after South Bend closed. Being 40 miles from the closed plant, he felt he'd never sell anyone in Rochester a car from Canada.

My love for Studebaker started when I was three years old. The first car I remember was our 41 Champion 2 door and we had eight others until the company went out of business.

I was a car read Stude nut as a kid and went to any dealer I could find to see the new Studebakers. One of the largest dealers in Minnesota was Central Motors, 225 University Ave in St. Paul MN. It was advertised as covering an entire block and it did plus another block for used cars. They were in business from 1947 until mid fifties. I remember waiting in long lines to see the 53 models. The building was a Ford dealer until two years ago and other than a new facade was the same building.

    Brian Millette

Our 51 Commander Starlight came from Al Mergen's Motor Co on Grand Ave in St. Paul. He was in business until the late 50's.

One of my Studebakers a 63 2 door hardtop was bought at Joy Bros. Motor Car Co which is listed as a Packard dealer but did dual up and sell Studebakers starting in 58.

Here is another long time dealer in Minnesota.

Elmer Lueck Motor Sales in Danube Minnesota.

He was the only auto dealer in this small town. He was in business from 1936 till the end and then serviced Studebakers after that. The vast majority of vehicles in the town were Studebakers. My 57 President Classic came from this dealer.

In the late fifties many dealers in St. Paul and Minneapolis changed makes of autos or went out of business. Two of the large Minneapolis dealers went with Edsel and eventually came back with Studebaker. Here are some of the late smaller Studebaker dealers in the Twin Cities that, with one exception lasted for just a couple of years.

Rauschnot's Studebaker in St. Paul MN. 1956 until the end and he serviced and sold used Studebakers well into the 80s. I lived two miles from the dealership and often had my dad stop there for gas so I could see the cars he had in stock.

F.C Gamalgard Motors Inc. Minneapolis Studebaker from 59-61

River Lake Motors Minneapolis Studebaker from 60-62

Downtown Studebaker St. Paul MN 56-58 Another Studebaker dealer I would have my Dad drive by. They had a great showroom.

I ran across this Studebaker site and wondered if anyone could help me. I'm trying to track down information on the Phil Stambaugh Inc. Studebaker dealership that was at one time in Los Angeles on S. Atlantic Blvd.

I'm actually trying to locate someone who can tell me about Jack A. Mauck, who was probably a salesman.

Any help you can offer will be very appreciated! Thanks.

    Regarding an earlier post.

Yes, it was on Cleveland St (south side). The dealership was between Greenwood and Myrtle. When the Studebakers moved on Dimmit Chevrolet had their used cars on that spot for a while. Across Cleveland was a Ford dealership ( corner of Myrtle and Cleveland). Last name I remember for it was Kennedy-Strickland Ford. I haven't been in Clearwater for a year, but I remember most of the 2 blocks along Cleveland being "redeveloped".

I am pretty sure the name was Fellows as in the Tampa store.

I just found on the web, the Studebaker Building on 4th St South in St. Petersburg. It may now be leased by a government agency. According to the blurb, it was called Peninsular Motors in the 20s.

We will be in the area For December, any thing Stude happening then?

Clark, I believe that the building is now the main showroom for Rinke Chevrolet. There is no longer a Qualmann Ave. in Centerline. I'll check it out in November when I head home for Thanksgiving.

Surprising that I do not see any trucks among the bulletnoses.

Erickson Studebaker, a long time dealer in Bloomer Wisconsin. In business from 39 to the end and serviced cars long after. Before Studebaker was a Oakland Pontiac dealer and after sold Chrysler products. According to the son who bought his Dad out, they often outsold Ford and Chev. Note the Tydol truck delivering gas. One of the trucks sold by that dealer.
