    David Lee Gibbs, 73, of Burlington died at 10:38 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2017, at his home.

    Born Oct. 20, 1943, in Burlington, he was the son of Warren E. and Ruth G. Smith Gibbs. On Jan. 14, 1966, he married Barbara Jean Ross in Biggsville, Ill.
    Mr. Gibbs was a welder at J.I. Case for 28 years and worked at General Electric for 11 years.

    He was a 1960 graduate of Burlington High School.
    He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany. He enjoyed touring Europe while he was there.
    He was a member of the Des Moines County Historical Society, the Studebaker Drivers Club, and the Big 6 River Bend Chapter of that club.. He was a nondenominational Christian whose faith was important to him.
    He enjoyed being outdoors, raising catfish in his pond, mushroom hunting, restoring old Studebakers, anything involving history, car shows and, most of all, time with family.
    Survivors include his wife; one son, Mark A. Gibbs of Broken Bow, Okla.; four daughters, Debbie Gibbs Pinney of Ashland, Ill., Dana L. Gibbs of Chicago, Tami Gibbs Fries of Omaha, Neb., and Wendy Gibbs Mather of Mount Union; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Steven Gibbs of Riverton, Wy.; three sisters, Lynda Gibbs Mettler of Arkansas, Carol Gibbs Parker of Rushville, Ill., and Janet Gibbs Scott of Illinois; and nine nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents.
    Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
    The funeral for Mr. Gibbs will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Titus Lehmen and Patricia Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will follow in the funeral home’s community room.
    A memorial has been established for the University of Iowa Foundation for brain cancer research.
    The Big 6 River Bend Chapter is donating in his name.
