How to soften rubber

There was a few posts a while back on what to use to soften
rubber anbody rember were they were at.I have a nos
gas pedal that wont bend.

Try using a cleaning product containing lanolin cream such as the handcleaners used for heavy grease removal. I use one that I buy at Canadian Tire and use more of it on rubber parts and other stuff than I do on my hands. It is super for softening and cleaning the rubber weatherstrip. I scrub it into the rubber with an old toothbrush, and wipe off the residue with paper towels. A gas pedal might be too thick and hard for the lanolin absorption, but its worth a try.

That thick rubber gas pedal may be a candidate for using silicone spray. I've used silicone spray on rubber weather stripping with success.

Lenny, Paint remover will soften rubber. Use the paint remover that adhears to surfaces so that it won't run off. You might want to do some test work if the rubber is critical for survival. Don't leave the paint remover on too long or it will really soften the rubber too much, that is why I would do some testing to get an idea of how long to leave it on a surface.

If all else fails, glycol-based (DOT3 or DOT4) brake fluid will soften rubber as well. Just don't get it near any painted surface.

My father-in-law was chemist among other things. He said glycerine softened rubber. I don't know if you can get that any more. I had some but don't know where it is.

Stupid question (not my first!) and hopefully not too far off-topic... Why do you need to soften/bend the rubber gas pedal? Be kind with your answer to those of us who have not encountered your problem!

To soften the brake pedel to instal on my 66 I put it in hot water to make it soft to slide over pedal, worked great. Doug M

After you mount it spray it down with STP Son of a Gun and let it soak in overnight. Wipe off any excess the next day. Keeps it soft for a long time and won't pull the oils from the rubber like some of the other rubber treatments. Spray silicon woks fairly good too.

The gas pedal is solid rubber no hinge,it bolts to the floor &
is suposed to bend when you step on it.
